Downton Through Time Year 2 – Term 4 Literacy We will be looking at features of a newspaper article – headings, photographs, past tense, speech and writing own newspaper articles about the Downton train crash. Writing a non-chronological report about different jobs in Downton’s history. Designing questions to ask former pupils of Downton Primary. Diary entry for a day at Downton Primary School in days gone by. Guided Reading and comprehension, finding answers within a text and answering questions requiring inference. Developing our skills for independent reading. Grammar work – writing for meaning, using a range of sentence types, using apostrophes for missing letters and contractions, changing adjectives with prefixes and suffixes. Science Sound – how are sounds made? How do we hear sounds? Which materials let sound travel through them? Exploring vibrations and how the ear works. Investigation skills – making a fair test. Observing seasonal change – looking for signs of spring. Maths Practise solving mathematical problems using mental maths skills and partitioning - addition and subtraction problems. Using standard written methods for adding and subtracting two digit numbers. Measures – units of measurement for weight and capacity. Using scales and containers accurately to weigh items and measure amounts of liquid. Fractions – recognise, name, find and write ½, ¼, ¾, 2/4, 1/3 of shapes and of quantities. Increase rapid recall of multiplication and then associated division facts. Properties of 2D and 3D shapes including lines of symmetry. Working out the missing value of any digit in a number sentence using all four operations. Using the inverse operation as a means to check an answer to a problem. Solving mathematical problems in contexts including using money to pay and give change. Downton Through Time History Downton’s changing population over time. Observing changes in maps of the village. Finding information. Changing jobs and industry in Downton – old and new. Travel in Downton – finding the old railway line. What happened in the Downton rail crash? Education in Downton and the history of Downton Primary School. How has it changed? Using photographs, maps, memorials, buildings, books, people as sources of historical evidence and information. Art/DT Sketching and real life drawing. Sketching old and newer buildings. Making our own paper to draw on. Cross stitching PSHE Learn 4 Life – My friends and family unit of work. RE Key Question: Is it true that Jesus came back to life again? Exploring the Easter story and what it means to Christians. Exploring our worship theme. Music Singing with Miss Arch. Following the dcappo music scheme. Computing Following up our work on algorithms and creating a simple programme, tinkering with it and looking at ‘debugging’.
