Is what we’re doing, working? Steve McGinley & Elisa Maruzzo

Turning Words into Actions Eat Healthy! Drink Water! Sleep more! Think positive! Get active! Screen less! This is what we tell people. And we TELL them this. ALOT. But, is it working?

Using Technology to Engage Learners What if we turned those words into action? What if we did more than tell people - but we engaged them! We do a good job of engaging people. But we can do more.

Activation & Accountability Example: The 60 Minute Kids’ Club Let’s activate those words and hold ourselves accountable to the engagement and results. An example of this is the 60Minute Kids club campaign. a free program that supports kids aged 5-12 to track 6 healthy habits and build healthy lifestyles. The tool is rolled into an activation strategy known as the 60MKC Healthy Habits Challenge . It is a blend of high tech and high touch practices that are proven successful.

Introduction to the Program Evaluation Steve McGinley Jeffery Zahavich Lecturer, PETE Area Coordinator PhD Health (Student) Faculty of Education Faculty of Health Professions Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy Dalhousie University The University of British Columbia What ? Myself from UBC and Jeff Zahavich from Dalhousie were hired as external researchers by the 60 MKC team to conduct a program evaluation of the current Healthy Habits Tracker.

Purpose of the 60 MKC Program Evaluation Why? - This program evaluation looked at how the 60 MKC Challenge is supporting the efforts in the school classroom in the areas addressed by the healthy trackers and how the Challenge aligned with local provincial curriculum outcomes.

Methodology and Participants How? We created an online focus group discussion page and gathered insights and feedback from 22 active participants representing 26 schools across 5 Canadian provinces. The participants identified themselves as teachers, physical education specialists, 60 MKC Champions or after school program instructors.

Examined Topics and Questions We engaged in a variety of discussion topics that included, the overall user experience, the teachers teaching and pedagogical practices, teacher and students’ Motivation and Engagement with the challenge, resources, barriers, supports and we even debated approaching the 60MKC as a challenge vs an educational tool.

Emerging Themes and Key Learnings The responses from the participants provided us with rich data. The Champions passionately opened up and offered positive feedback, negative feedback and constructive ideas to further improve the overall challenge for future use.

Key Learnings: Significant impact “60MKC has definitely made a significant impact on the participating Champions within this focus group and their participating kids.” (McGInley and Zachvich, 2016) The strongest message, by far, to come out of this evaluation was that the 60MKC has definitely made a significant impact on the participating Champions within this focus group and their participating kids. There was an overall general consensus that the Challenge supported the Physical and Health Education Curriculum in their respective provinces and the students developed a more in depth understanding of the 6 Healthy Habits.

Key Learnings: Vehicle to drive a common language An overwhelming amount of Champions spoke about the idea of the Challenge acting as a vehicle to drive a common language surrounding the healthy habits throughout the school year.

Key Recommendations Opening the Challenge to Champions all year long Promote active participation from the child's parents The development of a mobile app to aid in the accessibility A clear emphasis on the links and connection of the 60MKC with the local curriculum is critical for the future planning and sustainability of the 60MKC. We coded the data received from our Champions in the online focus group and provided a list of strong recommendations moving forward. Key recommendations include: Opening the Challenge to Champions all year long Promote active participation from the child's parents The development of a mobile app to aid in the accessibility A clear emphasis on the links and connection of the 60MKC with the local curriculum is critical for the future planning and sustainability of the 60MKC.

Conclusion and Validation In conclusion, the current Champions are willing to engage and deliver the Challenge again. Our comprehensive program evaluation of the 60 MKC Challenge has validated the CURRENT Challenge. We have offered recommendations for future improvements and we feel these are the crux for future success of the Challenge. The online focus group discussion supported these ideas very clearly and are invaluable to setting the direction and ultimately we will be given the opportunity to support and improve a new and improved Challenge.

Engagement Campaigns take info/edu into ACTION [Compelling Message] + [Engagement Strategy] [Accountability] = IMPACT!
