Lesson Starter Explain what happens inside the eye of someone who is a) LONG sighted b) SHORT sighted and explain how to correct it

Think, Pair, Share When do you get rainbows? Why do rainbows occur? Where have you seen a similar spread of colours?

Don’t stare directly at the light. Beware-bulbs may get hot! Investigation Shine a ray of light at a prism and move the prism until colours appear. What colours do you see? Are the colours always in the same order as you move the prism around? Draw a diagram to show what your observed. SAFETY: Don’t stare directly at the light. Beware-bulbs may get hot!

When white light is refracted through a prism the colours separate out because it moves slowly through the glass this is called dispersion

White light is made up of 7 colours Light moves in waves The different colours move at different speeds - Red light has the longest wavelength - Violet has the shortest wavelength

Why do you see rainbows? Droplets of water in the air act like prisms and split the white light from the Sun into a spectrum of different colours.
