What is Healthy Ireland? Increase the proportion of people who are healthy at all stages of life Reduce health inequalities Protect the public from threats to health and wellbeing Create an environment where every individual and sector of society can play their part in achieving a Healthy Ireland Improving Health and Wellbeing in Ireland

Improving Health and Wellbeing in Ireland Why Healthy Ireland? 49% of Irish people over 50 have one chronic disease and18% have more than one 1 in every 10 people over 50 years of age has diabetes The major chronic diseases; diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory disease will increase by 20% -30% in the next 5 years 1 in 5 of all of us will experience mental health problems in our lifetime 36,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year Improving Health and Wellbeing in Ireland

Chronic Disease Chronic disease accounts for 76% of deaths, 80% of GP consultations, 40% of admissions, 75% of bed days and 55% of hospital expenditure in Ireland 6 6 6 6 6
