Sunday Morning in the Word October 15, 2017

In Desperate Times A Study of 1 Peter Today: 1 Peter 2:1-10

1 Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. Immediate context Wider context - All of chp. 1

1 Peter 1:3a Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth . . .

Chapter one of 1 Peter (wider context) vv. 3-12 – God’s Mercy (what God has done for us!) vv. 13-25 – Our Response (what we are called to do!) vv. 13-21 – God-directed response: “Be Holy, for I am holy!” vv. 22-25 – One another-directed response: “love one another constantly”

1 Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. Immediate context Wider context - 1:22-25

One another-directed response 1 Peter 1:22-23a Since you have purified yourselves by your obedience to the truth, so that you show sincere brotherly love for each other, from a pure heart love one another constantly, 23 because you have been born again . . .

“The chapter divisions commonly used today were developed by Stephen Langton, an Archbishop of Canterbury. Langton put the modern chapter divisions into place around A.D. 1227. (The Wycliffe English Bible of 1382)

“The Hebrew Old Testament was divided into verses by a Jewish rabbi by the name of Nathan in A.D. 1448. Robert Estienne, who was also known as Stephanus, was the first to divide the New Testament into standard numbered verses, in 1555. Stephanus essentially used Nathan's verse divisions for the Old Testament.” (Geneva Bible of 1560)

1 Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. 1 Peter 1:22-23a Since you have purified yourselves by your obedience to the truth, so that you show sincere brotherly love for each other, from a pure heart love one another constantly, 23 because you have been born again . . .

Becoming the Family God Wants Us to Be 1. Get rid of the heart attitudes which destroy relationships! (v. 1) 1 Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander.

Becoming the Family God Wants Us to Be 2. Get into the word of God which will grow us in the Faith! (vv. 2-3) 1 Peter 2:2-3 Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that you may grow up into your salvation, 3 if you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Reading the Bible Supernaturally: Seeing and Savoring the Glory of God in Scripture John Piper

Desire the pure milk of the word “The most basic prayer we can pray about reading the Bible is that God would give us the desire to read this book. Not just the will–that would be next best–but the desire. That is what the apostle Peter said we should have “like newborn infants long for the pure spiritual milk.” In like manner, the Psalmist said that the righteous person delights in the law of the Lord (Psalm 1:2).”

Desire the pure milk of the word “And why wouldn’t we since God’s words are “more to be desired than gold” and “sweeter . . . than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb (Psalm 19:10)?” Why wouldn’t we? Because our hearts tend to become cold and dull and hard and blind. That’s the most basic reason we need to pray about our Bible reading. We drift away from the desire to do it.” (John Piper, Reading the Bible Supernaturally)

Desire the pure milk of the word 1 Peter 2:2-3 Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that you may grow up into your salvation, 3 if you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:3 (NIV) now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Christ rejected by people John 1:11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. Isaiah 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.

Get better acquainted with the church’s one foundation, Jesus Christ our Lord! (vv. 4-10) 1 Peter 2:4-5 As you come to him, a living stone—rejected by people but chosen and honored by God— 5 you yourselves, as living stones, a spiritual house, are being built to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:4-10 For it stands in Scripture: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and honored cornerstone, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame. 7 So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving, The stone that the builders rejected— this one has become the cornerstone, 8 and a stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
