Mainstreaming Conflict/Disaster Risk Reduction (C/DRR) in Education Conflicts and disasters are on the rise globally, and the Asia and Pacific Region is the most vulnerable region to these calamities Education can play a major role in reducing risks of conflicts and disasters by educating people as well as providing safe-haven for people who may be affected Education planning to develop policies and strategies for integrating C/DRR- a cost effective initiative. Why C/DRR in Education?

Background on Mainstreaming C/DRR in Education Capacity development for Ministries of Education to integrate C/DRR into education sector In close partnership with UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) and Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEMEO) – Asia Pacific Resilience in Education Group (APREG) Three components Regional Seminar on Integrating Conflict and Disaster Risk Reduction (C/DRR) into Education Sector Plans, Curricula and Budgets (October 2015, Bangkok Thailand) Representatives (planning and curriculum experts) from Ministries of Education of Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, the Philippines, and Thailand Distance Course Managed and monitored by UNESCO-IIEP (International Institute for Educational Planning) Module on C/DRR in education at local level (Microplanning Toolkit) Drafted in close cooperation with UNESCO Kathmandu Office National level follow-up conducted based on requests from Member States Solomon Islands, Cambodia and Myanmar Seeking opportunities to expand support in different sub-regions (South Asia and Central Asia)

Structure of the Toolkit Mainstreaming Conflict and Disaster Risk Reduction (C/DRR) in Education C/DRR module of Microplanning Toolkit Aims to support educational planning at local level Why C/DRR in micro-planning? Since C/DRR needs vary significantly within a country, micro-planning may be the most efficient and effective way to improve resilience of the education systems Structure of the module 1. Conflict/Disaster Risk Reduction (C/DRR) in Education C/DRR module of Microplanning Toolkit Following the 5 steps of educational planning, the module provide local level planners with guidance on what and how to integrate C/DRR elements into educational planning Currently being revised in order to incorporate country cases and good examples Expected to be finalized by the end of 2016 1) Analysis/Diagnosis 2) Policy Review/Formulation 3) Selection of Priority Programs and Key Objectives 4) Costing and Financing Framework for C/DRR 5) Monitoring and Evaluation Framework
