Background Knowledge Australian author Markus Zusak was born in Sydney in 1975. He is the son of an Austrian father and German mother and he is the youngest of four children. At the age of 30, Zusak is considered as one of today's most innovative and poetic novelists. With the publication of The Book Thief, he is now being dubbed a 'literary phenomenon'  by Australian and U.S. critics. Zusak is the award-winning author of four previous books for young adults: The Underdog, Fighting Ruben Wolfe recipient of a 2006 Printz Honor for excellence in young adult literature, Getting the Girl, and I Am the Messenger. He lives in Sydney, with his wife and daughter.

Scanning Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions about the story. 1. What happens to Liesel’s brother? Her brother is sick and dies on the way. 2.
