Texas during the Age of Oil So Texas was an interesting place during the age of oil, A defining characteristic of Texas during this time would be Growth of Urban Area. You see Oil was discovered at spindletop in 1901. The physical landscape of Texas changed in that Boomtowns sprang up all over the state. The Texas state government changed to address the growth of the oil industry by The Texas Railroad commission being established to regulate and control oil prices. The Rapid industrial expansion changed the distribution of Population within Texas because Cities expanded rapidly.

Boom & Bust Cycles Boom and Bust cycles can be defined as A period of poor profits followed by a large growth in the industry.

Populist movements So the Populist movement happened predominately in the south. You see Farmers didn’t feel like they were being heard and as a result they started a movement called the populist movement. I suppose you could say that an official definition of the populist movement would be a group of reforms designed to protect agricultural workers.

James Hogg This Texas was elected as a governor with the support of groups like the Texas Farmers Union, Farmers Alliance, and the Grange. Also check out this guys awesome beard!!!!

Texas Equal Suffrage Association Voting rights were SO important! We will talk more about voting rights for Africans Americans come 8th grade but for now let’s focus on the Texas Equal Suffrage Association. This organization was created to Protect the Voting rights of that had been granted to African Americans.

Woman & World War One World War one was a major opportunity for Woman. Many men went about fighting overseas and the woman were left stateside and went to work for the war effort. A lot of woman desiring to support the war entered the work force in ammunitions factories or creating gear, clothing, rations for the soldiers overseas. As a result of world war one Many Women entered the work force!

Let’s talk Texas Growth & Hurricanes! Most growth happened in Texas in Houston & Dallas between 1900 and 1930’s. As you know Texas had a large number of Hurricans strike the Coast one of the worst was the great storm of 1900, as a result Galveston build a seawall to protect from flooding by hurricanes. Not only that but Galveston also raised the island by 12 feet. The Hurricane affected economic development in Texas also because after the storm most major industries in Galveston moved inland to Houston. Urbanization in Texas resulted in more jobs in Service related fields. Even the Expansion of the Railroad system throughout Texas resulted in the growth of Urban Centers such as Dallas and Houston.

OIL AND TEXAS Texas is currently one of the largest states in the United States and the Oil reserves are no different. Have any of you ever been fishing out in sylvan beach? Did you notice all of the small oil platforms that are out in the gulf, these were used at some point to draw out oil from underwater wells. Texas had huge oil reserves and Howard Hughes, Sr. was a tycoon of the industry, He mode huge contribution in the petroleum industry. You see, Technological innovation helped to expand the Oil Industry in Texas.
