GUN CONTROL By: Elena Benoit

Introduction It is simple in todays society that we are bent on blaming the gun for this senseless attack and not the person pulling the trigger. This is evident in the recent movement of Gun Control. The problem is that mandated Gun Control does not keep people who commit violent crimes from getting a gun and shooting people. Today we will attempt to persuade you into seeing that gun control is not the answer to violent crimes by giving you the positive aspect of gun control, why we are against it, and know some of the facts and preventions based on the violence of using guns.

Pros Do Gun Control Laws Really Reduce Crime? Studies have shown that Gun Control may have increased crime. In 1966, New Jersey adopted what sponsors described as the most stringent gun law two years later, the murder rate was up 46 and the robbery rate nearly doubled. Studies also show that the crime rate in some states that have more relaxed gun laws, are low. Among the 15 states with the highest homicide rates, 10 have restrictive or very restrictive gun laws.

Pros (cont’d) Are Guns Really To Blame? Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Controlling guns wont help reduce the crime rate, because people will just find another weapon. Maybe the government should focus on trying to find out what drives criminals psychologically. People have a right to bear firearms, according to the 2nd amendment. Guns can be used as protection against burglars.

Why we don’t need control on guns in todays society. Sports and Recreation Gun awareness Constitutional rights Self-defense Home security

Preventions Each year there are 34,000 gun related deaths in the US. Gunshot wounds are the single most common cause of deaths among women in homes. Criminals use firearms to commit 440,000 violent crimes a year.

Preventions (cont’d) Children and Guns According to gun expert, Gavin de Becker, everyday 75 American children are shot. An adolescent is twice as likely to commit suicide if a gun is kept at home. Gun shot wounds are the leading cause of deaths among teenage boys in America.

Preventions (cont’d) Firearms Safety Consumer Protection Act Regulate the manufacture, distribution, and sale of firearms and ammunition. Child Handgun Injury Prevention Act Regulate the design, manufacture, and performance in handgun discharge protection products. The Gun Show Accountability Act Regulate the sale of firearms at gun shows. Internet Gun Trafficking Act Regulate the transfer of firearms over the Internet.

Conclusion Now that I have told you about the positive aspects of Gun Control, the views on anti-gun control, facts on gun violence and some of the prevention acts, The ultimate aim of gun control is really gun abolition. Mutual protection should be the aim of citizens, not individual self-protection.
