PTT Process Methods? The system Findings Background of system

An Australian Context National standards implementation underway Program learning outcomes need to be aligned to these standards Teacher employment process relates directly to demonstration of standards Mobile technologies are on the increase Hattie and Timperley (2007) identify feedback that is immediate, specific, positive and corrective as having the most powerful influence on PST learning. Blended learning and mobile learning Expectations emerging from mobile penetration of learning environments include immediate access to educational content – anywhere and at any time (Moldovan & Muntean, 2012)

Do pre-service teachers want immediate feedback? If they do, is this the best time for them to reflect?

PTT Concept Formation Explore how a mobile device might assist pre-service teacher assessors and students in the formative and summative assessment processes. Inconsistencies in summative assessment decision making about new standards paper notes use of non-standardised criteria and assessment rating scales. Little structured and documented formative assessment that can promote on placement learning. Increasing validity (measuring what is supposed to be measured) and reliability (consistent across a cohort) of the school based assessment

Focus on assessment of skills requiring observations In practicum experiences there is a video streaming system (m-View) and connection systems including Adobe Connect, Skype and manual use of Pocket Camcorders (Gronn, Romeo, McNamara & Teo, 2013) One-off samples of performance might not reflect the overall performance of the Preservice teacher (Mackaway et al., 2011) Soft skills identified in teacher accreditation standards. are very effective in promoting learners’ resilience demonstrate enthusiasm for working with children and young people ***

PTT Features Secure Log in Admin School or Site Teacher or assessors Students Can accept standards/skills/competencies at three levels Allows tap and go functionality to rate all items Stores resources for use by assessors and site co-ordinators with potential for schools, university program designers and the system

Pre service teacher assessment on Mobile

The Trial 6 participating schools in Sunshine Coast region 4 week trial Pre-service teacher placements as part of UG program 7 Users of mobile and 9 users of the web only system

System outputs The system tracks the data of all users It stores this for generating reports Reports can be tailored to the needs of user Video and photographic data can be collected over time as evidence of training and to verify progress

Quantitative results Positive findings System helped mentors to be more effective in providing feedback System helped mentors to stay focused on learning outcomes System helped to set goals for development System helped pre-service teachers identify own teaching skills
