Year 10 Subject Selection Forensic Science

Course Description This unit deals with the scientific processes and techniques that are currently employed in the field of crime detection. Some of the areas of study covered in this unit include: deduction, reasoning, prediction and inference; fingerprinting; chromatography; DNA analysis; ballistics; hair and fibres; identikits; blood; soil analysis; and forgery/fraud.

Why Study this? Work Tasks Assessment tasks Work tasks include practical activities, chapter questions and classroom discussions on all topics covered in the unit. An example of some of the practical activities include: Fingerprinting Blood Spatter Hair and Fibre Analysis Handwriting Analysis Practical Reports Assignments Topic Tests End of Semester Exam

Subject pathway…. Students who undertake this subject are given a general introduction to studying Forensic Science. Disciplines of Science covered in course include: Psychology, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. VCE pathway: It is suggested that students who choose to undertake any VCE Science subject should also complete the relevant year 10 Science course (Physics, Psychology, Biology or Chemistry).

Extra activities/costs? There are no extra costs to students. There are no excursions or camps with this subject. Students are expected to participate in all laboratory practical activities.
