Apply Your Skills

Objectives To bring together and apply the communication skills you have learned in the preceding projects To organize your speech in a logical manner, following one of the suggested outlines To research the facts needed to support your speech Time: five to seven minutes

Developing an Outline Every good speech must be planned and arranged in an orderly fashion. Basic three-part format The opening The body The conclusion

AIDA Outline This approach is taught to many salespeople, and it can be applied to anything you are “selling,” whether it be ideas, objects, or actions. 1. A – Win their attention 2. I – Arouse their interest 3. D – Create a desire 4. A – Stimulate action or agreement

Borden’s Outline 1. Ho-Hum (Boring) This corresponds to your introduction. 2. . Why bring that up? Show that your subject is important, and relate it directly to the interests of your listeners. 3. For instance Give the audience concrete evidence: illustrations, facts, and stories 4. So what? Tell listeners what you want them to do. Be specific and finish forcefully

Problem-Cause-Solution Outline This approach fits especially well with a talk on community or social subjects. The problem is… The problem is caused by… Some solutions are The best solution is…

Speech Preparation Choose a subject that is significant for listeners. Determine how you want your audience to react and plan your speech toward that end. Begin research. Concentrate on supporting all your points with specific facts, examples, and illustrations. Select one of the three outlines and use it as a framework for your speech.
