“Finding a job is itself a job.”

The Correspondence of the Job Search Letter of Application or Cover Letter Résumé Follow-up Letter Online submission forms Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter

Organization of Résumés Chronological résumés Advantages: Traditional; acceptable Can show a steady progression toward the career you seek. Disadvantages: Special capabilities or accomplishments may get lost in chronological details. Holes in employment or educational history show up clearly. Functional résumés Highlights the experiences that show you at your best. Extracurricular experiences show up well. Difficult for reader to discern a steady progression of work and education.

Formatting the Résumé To emphasize qualifications, organize information, and provide ease of reading: Vary type and spacing Use wide margins and white space for ease of reading Use distinctive headings and subheadings Format with two-column spread Boldface headings Use Ariel 12-point type for headings; Times 10-point type for text *WARNING: Avoid being overly complex or using decorative fonts and typographical variation*

Write follow-up letters: if after two weeks you have received no answer to your letter of application; after an interview; if a company fails to offer you a job; and to accept or refuse a job.

What to bring to the interview: résumé portfolio of work, if appropriate pen and notebook list of references business card

Likely Job Interview Questions • What can you tell me about yourself? • What are your strengths and weaknesses? • What do you want to be doing five years from now? • Why would you want to work for us? • Why should we hire you? • What accomplishment are you most proud of? • What is the biggest problem you’ve encountered and how did you solve it?

"The immediate goal of all your preparation and letter and résumé writing is an interview with a potential employer."
