“The Pit and The Pendulum” Background: Imagine being sentenced to a torturous death without any insight into when or how it is going to happen. In Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum, the unnamed narrator finds himself in a terrifying situation after 'the robed judges' sentence him. During the Spanish Inquisition, heresy, which is not adhering to the Catholic religion, often resulted in execution in extremely public and painful ways. This story describes the experience of a man who has been sentenced to death. Let's find out what happens. The Sentencing: At the beginning of the story, the narrator is explaining his reaction as he is sentenced to death by the inquisitors. Until that moment, it seemed impossible to think that something would not save him from this terrible fate, but then “the figures of the judges vanished, as if magically, from before me; the tall candles sank into nothingness; their flames went out utterly; the blackness of darkness supervened; all sensations appeared swallowed up in a mad rushing descent as of the soul into Hades.” Shock takes over and the narrator remembers little of what happens next. While he doesn't completely lose consciousness, the break in mental capacity that follows makes it difficult for the narrator to recall the events that led him to his dungeon in Toledo. It is as if he awoke in a dark room with no understanding of where he is or how he got there.
