CONTRIBUTION TO IOC-NEAMTWS Design of a Tsunami Detection Network in the Gulf of Cadiz R. Omira, M. A. Baptista, L. Matias , J. M. Miranda, C. Catita, F. Carrilho, E. Toto

Computed tsunami maximum wave height and travel time for different earthquake scenarios in the Gulf of Cadiz.

Tide guages Network in the Gulf of Cadiz zone Map displaying: MWH along the Gulf of Cadiz coasts considering all the tsunamigenic scenarios, existing and 4 additional tide gauge stations (TG1 to TG4 in red dots) recommended for the region.

Tsunameters design for the Gulf of Cadiz region The study adopts a specific strategy for tsunameter installation based upon three main criteria: (i) maximization of warning time, (ii)coverage of all the area where tsunami can be detected and (iii) the conditions of installation: flat bottom topography and a “safe” distance from the seismic source for station location Established tunameters monitoring network for the Gulf of Cadiz region. White stars are the recommended positions for DART-like sensors in the area. Graphs illustrate waveforms recorded by the proposed DART-like network; only waves detected in the time interval of 0 -10 minutes after the tsunami occurrence are considered.

Computed TAT to the proposed tsunameters (DART1, DART2 and DART3) and to different points along the Gulf of Cadiz coasts Tsunami Scenarios Dd-time for the 3 tsunameters (min) Minimum Dd-time (min) Tsunami Arrival Time (TAT) (min) Warning Time (WT) DART1 DART2 DART3 Sagres Lisbon Cadiz Casablanca casablanca GBF 29.5 17.9 9.4 30 84 72 13.6 67.6 55.6 HSF 15.1 3.4 5.2 24 33 54 22.6 61.6 43.6 MPF 18.1 8.6 21 60 8.8 13.8 59.8 47.8 PBF 5.0 10.1 17.2 42 57 12 45 CWF 7.8 16.3 27 40 48 38 12.2 25.2 53.2 23.2
