Characteristics of Good Sources Of Energy A good source of energy has the following characteristics :- Safe and Easy to use. Easy to transport. Easy to store. Large amount of work per unit volume or mass. Economical.

Classification of Sources Of Energy RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY These are those sources of energy which are being produced continuously in nature and are inexhaustible. These are also called non-conventional sources of energy. These resources will last as long as the earth receives light from the sun. These sources are freely available in the nature. These sources do not cause any pollution.

Classification of Sources Of Energy NON-RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY These are those sources of energy which have accumulated in nature over a long time and cannot be quickly replaced.. These are also called conventional sources of energy. These resources are depleting fastly. It is difficult to discover new deposits of these sources. Conventional Sources Of Energy THERMAL POWER PLANTS In a thermal power plant heat energy is converted to electric power. In most of the world the thermal power plant turbine is steam-driven. Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator

Conventional Sources Of Energy ADVANTAGES OF THERMAL POWER PLANTS The fuel used is quite cheap. It can be installed at any place irrespective of the existence of coal. The coal can be transported to the site of the plant by rail or road. Less initial cost as compared to other generating plants. It require less space as compared to Hydro power plants.

Conventional Sources Of Energy DISADVANTAGES OF THERMAL POWER PLANTS Huge production of Carbon-di-oxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.  Nuclear thermal power plant demands excessive amount of water for cooling purpose. Low overall efficiency.

Conventional Sources Of Energy HYDRO POWER PLANTS Hydropower or water power is power derived from the energy of falling water or fast running water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes. Flowing water contains Kinetic energy which is used for generating electricity. A quarter of energy requirements in India is met by hydro power plants.

Conventional Sources Of Energy ADVANTAGES OF HYDRO POWER PLANTS The main advantage of hydropower is that the production costs are eliminated and have a higher economic lifetime. The maintenance cost of such sources of “green energy” is very small. Given that hydroelectric power plants do not burn fossil fuels, they do not directly emit greenhouse gases.

These plants can operate, if the temperature difference between the surface water and water at depths upto 2 km is 20˚C or more.

Unlike other forms of solar energy, output of OTEC shows very little daily or seasonal variation. Drawing of warm and cold sea water and returning of the sea water, close to the thermocline, could be accomplished with minimum environment impact.
