Storyboarding user contribution of built numbers Dewey Breakfast/Update ALA Midwinter 21 January 2012 Dallas Michael Panzer Assistant Editor, DDC OCLC panzerm@oclc.org

Motivation Provide a way for users to save numbers they have built in WebDewey Personal and institutional built numbers Provide a way for users to contribute numbers they have built Components and steps in the number building process should be saved in well-formed 765 fields Eases editorial evaluation for inclusion in the classification as “official” built numbers Makes it possible to integrate such numbers into search and display in the local copy of WebDewey Number building assistant seems best way to ensure validity

Number building assistant: Requirements Can be used even without intention of saving the number Parses most add notes and other instructions to guide the user and construct MARC 765 fields in the background at the same time Component information is used to display how a number was built in a user-friendly way Helps the user in adding index terms to a saved built number

Feedback? How could this tool be most helpful? Do you want a way to build numbers manually (bypassing the assistant), with or without 765 fields? How should the process of manually creating numbers without using 765 fields work? Would you still like to save such numbers (including seeing them in the hierarchy)? How strongly should the user be guided through the number building process? Migrate numbers currently saved as user comments?
