Flu Vaccine School Immunisation Information Pack

Our service is delivered from: *All Infant, Junior and Primary Schools From 2016 all children in Years 1,2 and 3 will be offered the flu vaccine in school. The School Age Immunisation Service cover the whole of Derbyshire, from Glossop down to Swadlincote. Our service is delivered from: *All Infant, Junior and Primary Schools *Community Clinics (Where required) As a service we are keen to build relationships with all schools to ensure the children have the opportunity to receive this vaccine.

The vaccine is in the form of a nasal spray. It is made up of specially weakened, whole, live viruses. It has been changed so it cannot reproduce in the lungs….the nasal spray does not cause Flu.

The initial results from using the Flu nasal spray vaccine are as follows…

The vaccine will protect the children, their families and the wider communities (including teaching staff) from getting Flu. This will mean better attendance rates throughout the community for pupils, parent/carers and workers.

In readiness for the Flu sessions may we ask that you: Distribute the consent forms and remind parents to return in a timely manner Highlight the date of our visit on the school website, newsletter and via posters displayed in school. On the day of vaccination the session will run smoothly if as a school you are able to provide the following- A member of staff to assist with organising the pupils on the day of immunisations and a “runner” to collect children if a large school. A room to accommodate the staff and children. A waiting area or corridor where the pupils can be prepared for the vaccine. Access to hand washing facilities. Access to school wi- fi to access the pupils child health records. Car parking facilities if possible, or at least a provision to drop off equipment required for session. All the above are recommendation’s only, we are aware not all are a possibility.

After the vaccination- The children will be given a certificate and a sticker to take home to their parents. Children will be able to return to their classrooms after the vaccination to avoid disruption to their learning.   Possible side effects- Blocked/runny nose Loss of appetite Sore muscles Headache Fever Feeling Unwell however these symptoms are rare.

Flu is a virus that can give you a very bad cold and soon a team of nurses will be visiting the school to give you a Flu Spray. The Flu Spray is a special medicine that will help stop you or anyone close to you becoming poorly.

These are the uniforms that the nurses will wear when they come to school. The nurses will give you a piece of paper if a grown up has said they want you to have the spray. The nurse will need your piece of paper and will then ask you your name and how old you are.

The nurses will give you a tissue to catch any drips. The special medicine is given by squirting in both sides of your nose…It does not hurt but it can be tickly, cold and a little wet. The nurses will give you a tissue to catch any drips.

After your spray you will be given a certificate and a sticker as you have become a Flu Fighter!!
