Sun Kee Kim Seoul National University Goal of the workshop Sun Kee Kim Seoul National University Workshop on Double Beta Decay Search, Seoul, Oct. 15, 2009

Brief History of KIMS 97 Summer : First discussion on WIMP search (cryogenic detector) 3 Kims (SK,YD,HJ)  One day… we discussed on CsI crystal for WIMP…  demonstrated CsI crystal can be a WIMP detector 99 Spring : Enter the underground lab. (Cheongpyung) 00 fall : DMRC funded by Creative Research Initiative Program KIMS experiment launched (SNU, Sejong, Yonsei, Seongkyunkwan, Ewha, Maryland) 03 fall : Yangyang Underground Lab. constructed 06 spring : 1st physics result published (PLB)  pilot run (1 crystal) 07 summer : PRL paper published  engineering run(4 crystals) 09 Now: taking data  physics run(12 crystals) KIMS has evolved gradually starting from a small feasibility study

Cheongpyung, 1999

Colloquium presentation of SKK, May 2000

Colloquium presentation of SKK, May 2000 How could I make such a statement w/o funding?

Lesson from KIMS : We should not wait until everything is ready (budget, technology, manpower…) Instead, we should move ahead with whatever is available now. However, we need to identify the final goal of the experiment a detailed and plausible plan for the 1st stage experiment a sketch of path toward the final goal from the 1st stage  Letter of Intent

Double Beta Decay Search with CaMoO4 Proc. New View in Particle Physics (VIETNAM ’2004) Aug. 2004, p.449 IEEE Nucl. Sci. 52, 1131 (2005) NIMA 584, 334 (2008) CaMoO4 Large size and high quality crystal growing technique established 40Ca 100Mo O4 raw material for 5 kg crystal  being crystalized Photon sensors being studies Cryogenic detector with CMO is under development Compton edge FWHM ~ 0.2% @ 5.5 MeV 241Am a FWHM = 11.2 keV

First 40Ca100MoO4 crystals after big bang and we will have more
