Influential People Sophocles Career began in 468 B.C. at the Dionysus-annual theatrical competition In 62 years he wrote 120 plays 24 won first place The others were awarded 2nd place Only 7 survived Expanded the use of sets and props Explored universal truths gods influence humans, but man is ultimately responsible for his character and his life

Characteristics: Greek Tragedy Aristotle’s Poetics (Tragic Hero) Chorus Aristeia: moment of greatness Hubris: extreme pride or arrogance Hamaratia: tragic flaw Peripeteia: reversal of fortune Epiphany: striking realization that causes reflection and/or change of action Catastrophe: final tragedy Catharsis: release of emotional tension after an overwhelming experience, resulting in purging or purification of emotions Present stories of the gods’ lives in song Has a choral leader who often represents the whole Stories are often long and detailed

Significant Work: Oedipus Rex (the King) Young Oedipus hears a prophecy that he is destined to kill his own father and marry his own mother. He spends his entire life avoiding this.
