Presentation transcript:

How Does Music Affect Human Behavior? Will people be more open to questions when different kinds of music are playing in the background? Peter Yoon, Tommy Schiller

“What you are listening to will make you more(or less) willing to talk about yourself”

Hypothesis: All kinds of music, regardless of genre, will influence people to be more open, and certain types of music will facilitate more “openness”. Open: the willingness to be asked questions, and the extent that they would respond by revealing personal matters

The Experiment 3 different locations School Cafe Street 3 different kinds of background “music” Classical Aggressive Rap Silence

The Experiment 3 different locations 3 different kinds of background “music” 1st test - response to request for interview 2nd test - response to a series of questions Questionnaire increasing in intimacy as the subjects progress How far do they go? 3rd test - response to request for contact information

Questionnaire 1.What is your favorite color? 2.What do you want to become? 3.Why are you(remark on something about the person. Longer, more descriptive answers get higher scores)? 4.How many people are in your family? 5.Who is your favorite family member? 6.How is your family atmosphere? 7.What was your most painful memory as a child? 8.Are you in a relationship? 9.Were you in a relationship? 10.What was your fondest memory with a boy/girlfriend? 11.What was the reason for the breakup? 12.Will you be willing to take part in another experiment later? And then ask for phone number/facebook etc

School -Not much difference -People more “open” in UHS(United Sates) KIS UHS Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 1 9 o 2 8 3 10 Aggressive Rap 6 12 Silence 7 Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 1 12 o 2 11 3 Aggressive Rap Silence 9 11.33 9 12 7.67 11.33 -Not much difference -People more “open” in UHS(United Sates) -Rap slightly higher on UHS -Openness lowest in Silence

Cafe -People more “open” when music is playing Seoul, Korea Normal, Illinois Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 3 1 11 x 2 8 o 7 Aggressive Rap 5 9 10 Silence Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 3 1 12 o 2 8 x 9 Aggressive Rap 5 11 Silence 10 9.67 8.67 8.67 9.67 8.33 9 -People more “open” when music is playing -People more “open” in the United Sates -The only person wiling to give contact information in Korea was listening to classical music -The opposite in Illinois - 33% more when not listening to classical music

Street -Koreans were more “open” when music was not playing Seoul, Korea Normal, Illinois Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 7 1 x 2 11 o 3 10 Aggressive Rap 8 5 Silence Genre # no answer Subject # Stopped at Answer to 12 Classical 3 1 12 o 2 8 x 9 Aggressive Rap 5 11 Silence 10 9.33 9.33 6.67 9.67 10.33 9 -Koreans were more “open” when music was not playing -not much overall difference between cultures -33% more wiling to give contact information in Korea when listening to classical music, 33% more when listening to Rap in the United States

Further Analysis Americans were more open to questions by an average of 17.2% Classical music more effective on Koreans, Rap had equal, if not greater, effect on Americans School culture allowed for highest openness, except on Korean streets People were more open in outside of school settings by relying on their “anonymity”. They were more frank because they planned on never meeting the experimenters again, and did not have to worry about their image few were willing to give contact information, a sign of a prolonged, continuous, relationship Music has different effects in different locations

Potential Flaws Not all groups of the population subject to interview

Significance of this Experiment Helps better understand human behavior in not only physical surroundings, but also the auditory surroundings May help improve human interactions

Conclusion

All kinds of music, regardless of genre, will influence people to be more open, and certain types of music will facilitate more “openness” in different places.
