If we’re spending quality time with the Lord, …we’re going to be taking on His nature. Our intimacy with Him, our connection with Him, will bear tangible fruit in our lives. These are the qualities that will shine through in our spirits if we’re connecting deeply with our Husband and partaking of His Spirit.
A list of the fruit of Jesus dwelling in us is: Love, joy, peace, longsuffering or patience, gentleness, goodness, faith or faithfulness, meekness, and temperance or self-control.
3. 仁愛 Love: God is love. Jesus is the embodiment of God’s love. We, too, need to manifest the Lord’s love in every way we can. (Jesus:) You are all busy people, but someone who is taking sufficient quality time with Me will have My perspective, will notice the needs of others, and will have the conviction and the sensitivity in the spirit to do his or her part to meet them. A byproduct of spending time with Me is that you will have more love, you will want to do more things for others, to help them, pray for them, and be concerned about them.
4. 喜樂 The fruit of the Spirit is joy. Joy is great happiness or pleasure. So happiness is a fruit of the Spirit; it’s the joy of the Lord. Do you have it? Do others see happiness and joy in you? Do they see you smile and laugh? Do you manifest a happy, joyful spirit? Happiness is an important key, and you should ask yourself: How much happiness do I have? How often do I show that happiness? Do people feel that I’m happy in my life and in my work, and in my service to my Lord? Something to think about, isn’t it?
5.和平 Peace. Peace really comes from faith, and from trusting the Lord that everything is going to be okay. (Jesus:) One important fruit that results from a good spiritual life is peace, quiet trust in Me. I’m talking about the kind of peace that is not shaken every time an obstacle arises or something doesn’t pan out. I’m talking about the kind of trust in Me that allows you to go through your day — regardless of circumstances — knowing that I’m in control. By the same token, if a lot of things unsettle you, frustrate you, or cause you to worry, then that might be a sign that it’s time to up your input of Word, and invest some time in building a stronger relationship with Me. When you’re solidly connected to Me, things won’t get to you much.
6. 忍耐 Longsuffering or Patience. Patience is being able to endure waiting or delay without getting upset. It’s also, along with longsuffering, being able to persevere calmly when faced with difficulties. We often need to be patient, either with people or with circumstances, and we need to do so in a spirit of love, not getting upset at the people or at the circumstances. We need to be able to carry on in peace in trying times. We need to manifest faith that things are going to be okay. We need longsuffering, willingness to endure, even when things are tough, or even when something is bothering you. As they say, patience is a virtue, and it’s a virtue we really need in our line of work.
7. 恩慈 Gentleness Gentleness is having a mild and kind nature or manner. It’s also having a gracious and honorable manner. It’s kindness, consideration, and a spirit of fairness and compassion. That sure sounds like Jesus, doesn’t it?—Someone with a kind, gracious, honorable manner, who shows consideration and a spirit of fairness and compassion. That’s really something to strive for, isn’t it? Wouldn’t you like to have that said about you? It’s certainly what’s felt about Jesus, and if we’re close to Him and if we’re filled with His Spirit, if we really go for being filled with Him and possessed by Him, then this fruit of gentleness will be there in our lives, and people will feel it and will appreciate it.
8. 良善 Goodness. 8. 良善 The next fruit of the Spirit is goodness. Goodness consists of righteousness, holiness, justice, kindness, grace, mercy, and love. Other definitions include having an upright and virtuous character, and having a kind and gentle disposition. Again, these certainly apply to Jesus, and through having His Spirit abiding in us, they should apply to us as well.
9.信實 Faith or Faithfulness. One of the meanings of faithfulness is unwavering belief; another is being consistently trustworthy; another is being conscientious, having a sense of responsibility and a devotion to duty. It’s being dependable and loyal and stable. The Bible dictionary says faith is a belief in God, or a confident attitude toward Him, involving commitment to His will for one’s life. We know that faith comes from the Word, from abiding in it (Rom.10:17). And being like Jesus comes from the Word and abiding in it. In fact, it seems like all good things come from being in the Word and abiding in it, and letting it become part of us in a very deep way, and in every fiber of our heart and mind and spirit. So let’s really do as the Lord says and spend that time in the Word, so that we’ll have the faith, and so that we’ll have all of these fruits of the Spirit, which are so important that we, as the Lord’s representatives, manifest.
10. 溫柔 Meekness. Meekness is “an attitude of humility toward God and gentleness toward men, springing from a recognition that God is in control.” Isn’t that good? It is strength and courage under control, coupled with kindness.
11. 自制 Self-control. Self-control is the ability to control your behavior, especially in terms of reactions and impulses. Temperance is self-restraint in the face of temptation or desire. Temperance also has to do with having moderation in all things.
All the qualities on this list are the fruits of the Spirit. They’re the qualities that Jesus brings into our lives as we spend time with Him. They’re very beautiful qualities, aren’t they? They portray the Spirit of God.
Humility is the foundation You’ll notice that every one of these fruits of the spirit comes with the spirit of humility, and that is their foundation and frame. Humility isn’t dwelling on our inadequacies; it’s dwelling on the Lord’s adequacy. It’s dwelling on the fact that the Lord works through us; that, as weak and as incapable as we are, miraculously, He can actually work through us and use us. A humble person, then, focuses more on God and others than on himself. It’s wonderful, and a really good way to look at things.
Humility The aspects of humility that we want in our lives are the positive ones—showing mildness or quietness of nature, and strength and courage under control, coupled with kindness. This kind of meekness is having faith and peace, because you know God’s in control. You have faith, and therefore you have trust. You’re quiet in spirit. You’re depending on the Lord and not on yourself. You’re not depending on your own talent, your own wisdom, your own charisma. You’re just trusting, and because you trust, because you have faith, because you have confidence in the Lord, you have that calmness, that meekness, which translates to others as the Lord’s presence right there with you. They know everything’s okay, because you have that meekness, that quietness of spirit about you.
