Francisco Goya by Cole

Francisco Goya was born in Fuendetodos, Spain

Goya took his first art lessons from his father, who was a master gilder. Francisco also learned from friendly local monks. When he was 14 he became an apprentice to a village painter and realized that he wanted to become an artist. However the art academy rejected him in 1763 and 1766, which made him very disappointed.

Goya didn’t give up, but he go to Italy to study Goya didn’t give up, but he go to Italy to study. When he went back to Spain 1771 he began painting. He studied with an artist named Francisco Bayeu and eventually married Bayeu’s sister, Josefa. His marrige with Josefa enabled him to get a job creating designs for a tapestry factory in Madrid from 1775 until 1792. He designed many tapestries show things in his everyday life.

Goya thought tapestries were fun, but he wanted to be a full time painter. His luck changed in 1783 when one of the king’s friends asked Goya to paint his portrait, which turned out very well. In 1792 he got a fever that made him death. It took him 5 years to recover. Soon Goya’s paintings became much more darker. One of his paintings, was called The Third of May, 1808.

Francisco Goya died on April 16, 1828. Other modern artists learned from Goya’s style of painting.
