Wednesday August 31st, 2016 Daily Science Question: Why do they use the International System of units (e.g, meters, kilograms) during the Olympic games.

Likewise the International System of Units Because it allows people from all over the world to communicate the results of the different sporting events. Likewise the International System of Units allows scientists to compare data and communicate the results of scientific investigations. http://braunsciencepitcher.weebly.com

Red = countries that don’t use S.I. system Why Use S.I.? http://mrmalley.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/metric_system.png Red = countries that don’t use S.I. system

Which conversion could you do faster? Why Use S.I.? 1 ft = 12 in How many inches are in 25 ft? 1 cm = 10 mm How many millimeters are in 25 cm? Which conversion could you do faster?

Why Use S.I.? Based on powers of 10… easy to use Most of the world uses it… easier to communicate

Lesson Objective I can select and use appropriate tools and metric system units to make observations.

Base S.I. Units MASS: gram (g) LENGTH: meter (m) LIQUID VOLUME: Liter (L) SOLID VOLUME: cubic meters (m3)

S.I. Prefixes Added to beginning of base units Kilo (k) means x1,000  BIG measurements Centi (c) means ÷100  SMALL measurements Milli (m) means ÷1,000  TINY measurements

Length Distance between 2 points Tools: ruler, meter stick, tape measure Common units: m, cm, mm, km

Measuring Length (pick up your metric ruler) 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals. Ruler: http://www.k12math.com/math-concepts/measurement/ruler-cm.jpg

Metric Units km m cm mm The basic unit of length in the metric system in the meter and is represented by a lowercase m. Metric Units 1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) 1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm) 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters Which is larger? A. 1 meter or 105 centimeters B. 4 kilometers or 4400 meters C. 12 centimeters or 102 millimeters D. 1200 millimeters or 1 meter

What unit would you use to measure…. 1.The distance from Covington to New Orleans? Km 2. The size of your book? cm 3. The size of a small insect? (eg. Red ant) mm

Can you measure up? (7min) Use the appropriate tools to measure the following; remember to include the units: the length of a straw (cm) The width of the class (windows to door) m The length of the string (mm and cm) WRITE CLEARLY AND SAVE THESE MEASUREMENTS AS YOU WILL TURN THEM IN!

Conversions 100 cm = 1 m 1000 mm = 1m 1000 mm = 100 cm 10 mm = 1 cm So, there are ten times more mm than cm 153 cm = ? mm

Conversions 100 cm = 1 m 1000 mm = 1m 1000 mm = 100 cm 10 mm = 1 cm So, there are ten times more mm than cm 153 cm = 153(10) mm

Conversions 100 cm = 1 m 1000 mm = 1m 1000 mm = 100 cm 10 mm = 1 cm So, there are ten times more mm than cm 153 cm = 1530 mm General rule: When you go from larger units to smaller units you multiply When you go from smaller units to larger units you divide

Convert the Following 10 cm into mm 1.8 cm into m 47.9 mm into cm 329.8 cm into mm

Convert the Following 10 cm into mm = 100 mm 1.8 cm into m = .018 m 47.9 mm into cm = 4.79 cm 329.8 cm into mm = 3298 mm
