“Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose “Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.”

“He loved Big Brother” Denotation: Loved-held in deep affection; cherished Connotation: Wilson is brainwashed into thinking that Big Brother is the supreme leader. Impact on the text: Throughout the book, the reader can see that Big Brother wants its citizens to realize that they are the ultimate ruling force in their nation Back

“tears trickled down” Denotation: Trickled- to flow or fall by drops, or in a small, gentle stream Tears-this fluid appearing in or flowing from the eye as the result of emotion, especially grief Connotation: Shows its an emotional time for Winston, as he comes to the understanding that he has fallen back into the ways of the Party. Impact on Text: Shows that this is an emotional time for Winston. He is emotional because he was forced to believe in Big Brother.

“struggle” Denotation: to contend with an adversary or opposing force Connotation: Winston says that his struggle was finished. His struggle was fighting his internal thoughts of opposing thoughts on Big Brother. Impact on Text: Lets the reader know that Winston’s decision to conform with society was not easy. He was forced to fight a strong adversary in himself.

“But it was all right, everything was all right,” Anaphora: “the repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of consecutive lines or sentences” Structure: This literary device serves to show how Winston is trying to convince himself that everything is all right through repetition Back

“I love Big Brother” Anti-hero: a central character in a story, movie, or drama who lacks conventional heroic attributes Structure: This literary device shows how the main character eventually conforms to society after fighting it for the duration of the book

Literary Devices Motif: a recurring subject, theme, idea Structure: The recurring theme of control and totalitarianism is shown again in this quote. After being caught by the thought police, Winston is broke again to believe all that Big Brother tells him to believe in.

Questions When the tears trickle down his nose, are they tears of happiness or sadness?

Questions At what exact point in the book is Winston's turning point from rebel to conformist?

Personal Reaction I think that this passage shows the power and ability of Big Brother. Their ability to change the views of Winston, who was a die hard rebel, and wanted nothing to do with Big brother at the beginning of the novel shows their power. Winston has no other option but to conform to the thoughts of Big Brother.

Personal Reaction I believe that this passage shows the big theme of control. Winston was a member of the Party, looking to rebel; however, because of the government’s power he is transformed back into a conforming Party member. Whether or not Winston will have thoughts about rebellion again is uncertain.
