Grammar and Conventions #6: Commas – Meant to indicate a pause in a sentence When to use commas: Between two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction Ex: I hate bananas, but I love chocolate After introductory phrases, clauses, or words Ex: Even though I hate bananas, I will eat them with chocolate To separate items in a series or coordinate adjectives Ex: I like bananas, chocolate, and sprinkles on my sundae. To set of nonrestrictive phrases and clauses or appositives Ex: Bananas, which taste better in chocolate, are a source of potassium. To set off quotations Ex: The three-year-old child whined, “I hate bananas!”

To divide a compound subject or predicate Incorrect: Gabby, and Steve saw me walk by Incorrect: The ballerinas leapt, and twirled with pointed feet.
