Groups for Reading, Writing, Speaking, & Listening Rotation Stations Groups for Reading, Writing, Speaking, & Listening

Rotation Stations Rotation Stations will become a big part of our ELA class. It will allow you to do meaningful work independently during class. Rotation Stations will include a variety of stations like: 1) Meet with teacher 2) Skill Work 3) Writing/Working on Conventions 4) Vocabulary Work 5) Read-to-Self/Listen-to-Reading

Rotation Stations Routines for Independence What are routines? Why is independence important?

Reviewing… Rotation Stations will include a variety of stations like: 1) Meet with teacher 2) Skill Work 3) Writing/Working on Conventions 4) Vocabulary Work 5) Read-to-Self/Listen-to-Reading

1. Meet with Teacher Every group will meet with me weekly, but we will still have some whole group instruction as well. Bring a pen or pencil and your ELA notebook. With you will work on: Stories and Reading Skills Comprehension Writing Skills Test-taking Strategies

1. Meet with Teacher Sit at the kidney table… Bring all materials: ELA notebook and pencil. Pay close attention. Stay on task. Be respectful. Work the entire time. Follow all directions.

2. Skill Work After the Meet-with-Teacher Day, you will be working on related assignments, including any of the following: Stories and Reading Skills Comprehension Writing Skills Test-taking Strategies Review

2. Skill Work Sit at your desk… Get started right away. Work quietly. Ignore distractions. Stay on task. Follow all directions. Be respectful of group and classmates. Work until the timer goes off or signaled. If you finish early, read to self or study vocabulary. Put materials away when through or signaled.

3. Writing/Conventions You will work on a writing assignment or conventions of Standard English in this station. Lessons will include: Readtheory.org or another similar website NoRedInk.com Writing assignments Practice with capitalization, usage and grammar, punctuation, and spelling

3. Writing/Conventions Sit at your desk… Get started right away. Work quietly. Stay on task. Work the entire time. Follow all directions. Be respectful. Work until the timer goes off or signaled. If you finish early, read to self or study vocabulary. Put materials away when through or signaled.

4. Vocabulary Having time to focus on words is critical to your development as a reader, writer, speaker and listener. You will work on: Vocabulary Words Practice work with the Vocabulary Words Add to your knowledge of interesting words Prefixes, Suffixes and Root Words Be prepared to bring index cards to class for this rotation when our supply dwindles.

4. Vocabulary Work Sit with your group, but you must… Get started right away. Stay on task. Work quietly. Work the entire time. Follow all directions. Be respectful. Work until the timer goes off or signaled. If you finish early, read to self or study vocabulary.

4. Vocabulary- Make Vocabulary Flashcards: Write the word on the front. Write the definition of the word on the back. Take plastic bag to store your vocabulary cards. PUT YOUR NAME on or in your bag. You are responsible for keeping the cards to use in your studying to prepare for the vocabulary test.

5. Read to Self Students will get their independent reading book one from the classroom library and sit quietly at desks and read.

5. Read to Self / Listening to Reading Develop fluency and vocabulary Relax & listen to a good story and learn new strategies for different kinds of reading Be responsible by completing the reading and journaling Respond to a prompt in writing Reflect on what you read Communicate in writing

5. Read to Self Students: Get started right away. Read the whole time. Stay in your desk. Read quietly. Teacher: Works with student or group of students

5. Read to Self : How to Pick Just-Right Books Choose a book. Purpose – Why do I want to read it? Interest – Does it interest me? Comprehend – Do I understand what I am reading? Know – I know most of the words.

5. Read to Self : Where should I sit? In my desk and I must… Get started right away Read the whole time Ignore distractions Stay seated Read quietly Read until the timer goes off or you ‘re signaled Put books away if I got one from the shelf

5. Listen to Reading Develop fluency and vocabulary Relax and listen to a good story and learn new strategies for different kinds of reading Be responsible by completing the reading and journaling Respond to a prompt in writing Reflect on what you read Communicate in writing

5. Listen to Reading Where do I sit? What do I do? Get started right away Stay at the listening station or your desk if on Kindle Listen quietly Ignore distractions listen for all but the last 5 minutes Check for understanding by writing responses and/or reflections Work until you hear the timer go off or are signaled Return materials to the basket. Return basket to shelf

Read to Self Any time you are finished with your work, you should be reading independently. REMEMBER to become better at reading, you need to read; therefore, any extra time should be dedicated to reading.

Behavior Note: If you are not doing what you’re supposed to do at any station, you will practice appropriate behavior during lunch or after school. Detention will be assigned as needed.
