5th Grade Feature April 8, 2016 In school, we have been; At home you can; Reading Determining the author’s purpose, inspiration, and big idea when reading poetry Asking questions about poems to make connections, discoveries, and to deepen understanding Next Week Using background knowledge and content to figure out the words and phrases used in poetry Learning fix-up strategies to help us when we lose meaning or get confused while reading poetry Math Learning how to add and subtract mixed numbers Learning how to subtract mixed numbers using the renaming strategy Completing a summative assessment on Chapter 6: Adding/Subtracting Fractions Writing Sharing our persuasive essays and giving constructive feedback to our peers Learning about the features of biography writing Social Studies Learning about all sides of the American Revolution Reading and Writing: -Have a conversation with your child about a poetry book they have listened to in class or are currently reading. Ask them to tell you one interesting or unfamiliar word they discovered while reading. Have them use the new word in their own sentence. -Have your child tell you how much they are being sold for and why. They can pull up their persuasive essays to share with you on google docs. Math: -Study multiplication and division facts. -Have your child look up a recipe online that has mixed number measurements for ingredients. Have them find the total measure of all ingredients. (They may need to add two at a time) Social Studies: -Ask your child to tell you the difference between a patriot and British soldier. Extend their thinking and ask how they are the same.
