Citation Review In MLA format, there are two types of citations you can use: 1) In-text citations 2) Parenthetical citations ** It is best to use a combination of the two kinds. Each has its own benefits.

In-text citations The citation is done in the sentence itself. Page number (if applicable) is put in parenthesis at the end of the sentence. Good way to introduce a source when you use it the first time. Good way to insert quotes or opinion. Good way to cite films and interviews. Example: In the film, Food, Inc., the writers argue that the government is to blame for subsidizing cheap crops like corn. Michael Pollan in the article “When a Crop Becomes King” states that… (38). Use whole name and title when first introduced. According to Pollan, a bushel of corn sells for $2, but it costs $3 for them to grow it (43). You can use just the last name later in your paper.

Parenthetical citations Citation is done in parenthesis at the end of the sentence. Good to use when you have already introduced the source. Good for facts and statistics without opinion attached. Example: Corn is now fed to cows, chickens, pigs, and even pigs (Pollan 44). (Last name page #). No commas. When you combine two sources (or more)= (Pollan 43; Berry 32). Semi-colon If you have a number of facts in a row from the same author, same article, same page, you can put citation at the end of the last sentence.

Remember: CITE OR DIE CITE all quotes. CITE all facts and statistics. Even when you put an idea/fact in your own words (paraphrase), CITE!

Works Cited Every source you cite (even if you only use it one time) needs to be put on your Works Cited page. Good resource= Purdue OWL MLA format If you use Easy Bib, make sure you double check. Works Cited needs to be perfect for your final draft. Don’t need one for your rough draft. Formatting always takes longer than you think. Do your Works Cited before you get too tired.

Due Dates: Tomorrow: Descriptive outline (typed) Friday’s PowerPoint with directions & an example on my website Thursday: Rough Draft (typed) Tuesday: Final draft (typed) Will be presenting your thesis and a portion of your paper to the class.
