Standards of Measurement International System of Units (SI) Learning Goal: By the end of the lesson students will recognize the SI units of measurement and apply what they’ve learned with a density activity.

Critical Question / Self check Why is Density a derived (created) measurement? Critical Question / Self check Why is Density a derived (created) unit? Density is obtained by combining two or more units.

International System of Units (SI) International System of Units (SI) – a standard system of measurement used worldwide Burma, Liberia, and the United States are the only 3 countries who have not adopted the international System of Units.

Have any of you measured anything before Have any of you measured anything before? Have you ever used the SI standard? What would you measure this with? Discussion Hold up a round object…. They won’t know how to use a ruler to measure it, BUT you can use SI to figure it out!! woohoooo

Quantity Measured Unit Symbol Length Meter m Mass Gram g Time Seconds s Temperature Kelvin K Amount of substance Mole mol SI Base Units When we measure liquids the standard unit we will use is Liters, but it is technically NOT an SI unit. Quantity Measured Not really used Electric Current Ampere A Intensity of light Candela cd

Super Heroes of SI measurement A student can’t find her phone and the SI Super Heroes are going to help her create one Notice what every super hero is messing with; it’s a great way to remember what each unit measures http://www.nist.gov/pml/metric-100614.cfm

What we will use a lot in this class Time- Interval between two occurring events Mass- What we will use a lot in this class Is the amount of matter or substance in an object

Remember… the amount of matter or substance in an object Density Mass per unit volume of a material d=m/v Density determines if an object floats or sinks Is the amount of space an object takes up…

Waaaaaaaaaaay easier to do conversions!! Why the SI System? If you buy carpet, and need 100 square feet, the carpet costs $10 per square yard, how much? How many pints are in a gallon? How many pounds are 200 ounces? Which drill is the larger - the 13/64, the 1/4 or the 5/32? Which is more, 2 quarts, 5 pints or 36 fl oz? Waaaaaaaaaaay easier to do conversions!!
