ONTARIO BASKETBALL MODIFICATION #1 NOTE: To change images on this slide, select a picture and delete it. Then click the Insert Picture icon in the placeholder to insert your own image. ONTARIO BASKETBALL MODIFICATION #1 CLOSELY GUARDED If there is no shot clock (U10 Novice to U14 Major Bantam), a modification of the FIBA closely guarded rule will be applied. A five second closely guarded count will be applied when a player is holding the ball while an opponent is actively defending within one metre anywhere on the court, with the following exception: If, in the judgement of the officials, a team is withholding the ball from play and/or delaying, a closely guarded count will be applied when a player is holding OR dribbling the ball while an opponent is actively defending within one metre in the front court. As such, once the closely guarded count begins, the offensive player who is closely guarded must pass or shoot the ball within five seconds.

ONTARIO BASKETBALL MODIFICATION #2 OVERTIME The length of each extra period shall be four minutes long. Time-outs do not carry over to the overtime period. Each team receives one time-out per overtime period. Each overtime period begins in the direction of the possession arrow.

ONTARIO BASKETBALL MODIFICATION #3 DROP BACK RULE For U10 Novice teams, pressing is not permitted. For U11 to U14 teams, when a team leads by 15 points or more, its players must immediately ‘drop back’ into their backcourt behind the eight-second line once the losing team secures player control of the ball (dribbling or holding the ball) in its backcourt. The losing team shall be allowed to dribble the ball unimpeded across the eight-second line and establish frontcourt status. Violation of the rules stated above will result in the ball being awarded out-of-bounds to the losing team, at the frontcourt sideline, at the extended free throw line. Repeated violations of this rule may result in a delay of game penalty.

ONTARIO BASKETBALL MODIFICATION #4 LATE PLAYERS Although adding eligible player(s) after the game has started to the official scoresheet is permitted, the Equal Participation rule must be met for all players including late player(s). Players must play in at least one shift in the first half in order to fulfill equal playing time requirements and thus a player cannot be added in the second half and meet the Equal Participation rule.

NOTES TO DRBABO OFFICIALS OF ONTARIO BASKETBALL GAMES #1 It is the responsibility of coaches to check the score sheet for accuracy of shift tracking. If there is an error, both coaches must attempt to resolve the issue. Should a violation in equal participation occur, it is the responsibility of the coach to raise this issue with the tournament convener. It is the responsibility of the tournament convener to obtain/provide scorers/timers and shot clock operators. It is also the responsibility of the tournament convener to address any issues having to do with audience/spectator violations of the Ontario Basketball Code of Conduct. It is the responsibility of coaches and/or the tournament convenor to deal with issues such as person-to-person defense, trapping and pressing. The tournament convenor may direct the officiating crew to award a technical foul against an offending team that does not adhere to Ontario Basketball’s rules

NOTES TO DRBABO OFFICIALS OF ONTARIO BASKETBALL GAMES #2 It is the responsibility of DRBABO officials to ensure that playing facilities are safe. It is the responsibility of the tournament convener to address safety issues identified by DRBABO officials It is the responsibility of DRBABO officials to ensure that the last name of each player appears on the scoresheet, that the names of all assistant coaches appear on the scoresheet, and that the coach’s printed name and signature appear on the scoresheet PRIOR TO THE START OF THE GAME.
