What is phonics? Phonics is… Knowledge of the alphabetic code. Skills of segmentation and blending

What does phonics consist of ? Identifying sounds in spoken words Recognising the common spellings of each phoneme. Blending phonemes into words for reading. – d-o-g Segmenting words into phonemes for spelling. – dog What do children do? Sing Play sound games inside and outside Read Write

A Phoneme This is the smallest unit of sound in a word. A phoneme you hear

A Grapheme A grapheme you see These are the letters that represent the phoneme. The grapheme could be 1 letter, 2 letters or more! We refer to these as sound buttons. t ai igh

Grapheme Key Vocabulary 2 letters making one sound ( ai, ee, oo) 3 letters making one sound ( igh ,air, ear ) Where the two letters are not adjacent ( a-e, e-e ) Digraph Trigraph Split digraph

Letters and Sounds 4 x 15 min sessions a week Children are grouped by phrase across Key Stage 1 Phrase 1 - Preschool and Nursery Phrase 2- Early Years Phrase 3- Early Years Phrase 4- Year 1 Phrase 5 – Year 1 Phrase 6 – Year 2
