An Overview of Kantara Initiative, Inc. [SUB-TITLE] [Presenter] [Presenter Title], Kantara Initiative

The world is in the midst of a digital identity and personal data transformation.

This transformation is driven by: Individuals Business Government Technology and the economics of personal data, as drivers of transformation, are foundational Technology Personal Data

How do we define relationships between people, devices and services?

How can governments, industries and users work together to better manage data generated by new technologies and digital services?

Answer: Collaboration, Innovation and Taking Action.

This is where Kantara comes in Kantara Initiative is the global consortium improving trustworthy use of identity and personal data through innovation, standardization and good practice.

Our Core Work Nurture emerging technical communities through our discussion & working groups and our two incubators - Digital Identity Professionals, Identity and Privacy R&D. Develop and standardize community practices with specifications companies can understand, trust and implement.  Operate conformity assessment programs to enable companies to meet their adherence goals to standardized practices needed to support their business.

Who is Kantara? Our Leadership Examples of our Liaisons Non-profit founded in 2009 Offices in Europe and the United States Comprises 60+ Leading Organizations, hundreds of Participants, Enterprises & Governments Connects the best of Business, Government, Research & Education Our Leadership Examples of our Liaisons CCICADA is: a US Department of Homeland Security University Center of Excellence, to develop and launch a series of applied research pilots improving cyber identity in real-world situations and Kantara is a selected partner because it attracts new ideas and new thinking. EEMA is a European Association for e-Identity and Security – a not for profit, European Think Tank including topics on identification, authentication, privacy, risk management, cyber security Open Consent Group is a UK based Community Interest Company. A multi-standard and consent tech engineering group with a development sandbox. PDEC, a non profit industry association has been a pioneer in the field of personal data

The Kantara consortium has a unique two-sided platform Reliable collaboration services to businesses large & small, inventors and micro-startups that seek to standardize practices and integrate with other environments Certification & Conformity Assessment programs for implementers to establish and confirm policy and technical interoperability The platform is all about maturing ideas using processes: through invention of protocols and practices; open and transparent development of interoperability standards and best practices; and, testing and certification in preparation for potential contribution to national and international standards organizations.

Kantara Maturation Process This is the world of inventors and micro-startups. New ideas are developed to deal with an infinite range of market demands, use cases and technologies. Contributors can refine, shape and consolidate the inventions into common specifications and shared practices that lead to industry-best practices. Certification and testing criteria sets the foundations and makes broader market adoption possible. Invent Refine Implement Invent: Small startups, Inventors, Funded startups, Established organizations, Established organizations. Generate new ideas Innovate: Innovation involves the refinement and maturation of the inventions of the prior phase. Using a collaborative, competitive platform, multiple Evaluation and testing criteria are developed at this stage as the contributors learn more about the emerging innovations. A critical aspect in this phase is small scale implementations to prove technologies and approaches. Thoughtful application of investment dollars and resources accelerate innovations. Implement: Standardization via consensus approaches to found broad market adoption.

Kantara’s Offerings Governance, bylaws, operating procedures and publication channels to give intellectual property protection to participants Liaisons and Partnerships Neutral, competitive and dynamic collaborate space Kantara provides an infrastructure for any group to converse, meet and collaborate. Kantara provides well-established governance, bylaws, operating procedures and publication channels to give intellectual property protection to participants Kantara’s liaisons and working partnerships with inventors, innovators, governments, organizations and standards bodies create a highly valued network which makes it easier for members to find each other and increase shared network value

Kantara’s Scope of Activity . Role of Kantara in the Market: Standardization facilitator, creator & operator of assessment programs for ‘Innovation’ communities Phase Invention ➜ Innovation ➜ Implementation Activity Generate new ideas Standardization via consensus approaches Commercialization Organizations seeking standardization for interoperability Small startups Inventors Funded startups Established organizations Kantara’s Scope of Activity Kantara Programs Community Incubation “Community Groups” Conformity Assessment Interoperability Testing Kantara Community DG WG ARB + IRB Kantara Staff PMO Support Staff This slide shows a proposed life-cycle of a Kantara member or community. These blocks are intentionally aligned vertically. Community Incubation: active searching for potential community members. Providing a place to come together: Basic platform infrastructure, startup administration and organization Discussion Groups and Working Groups: the platform for standardization effort and collaborative development of codes of practice and leading practices. Initial creation and ongoing maintenance of Conformity Assessment Criteria happens here. Conformity Assessment and Interoperability Testing: Kantara operates these programs as a Conformity Assessment Body. Accreditation of assessors and testers, processing of conformity attestations, licensing of marks, monitoring status. Kantara could be in the ‘business’ of actively attracting new communities and giving them a place to exist. The community develops within a DG structure, publishing analysis, white papers and reports. If the community decides that they should create standards and leading practice material, they transition into a WG with the intention of feeding their outputs into a conformity assessment program. This community pipeline allows any community to enter or leave at any stage. So mature communities can bring their leading practice documents in; and communities that don’t flourish can exit. At all stages the communities are regularly challenged to consider ‘graduating’ to the next stage.

Our Recent Accomplishments UMA, the world's first open specification for federated delegation and authorization, based on the popular OAuth protocol. Consent Receipt Specification was developed to give control of personal data back to their customers. Kantara approves Credential Service Providers (CSPs) and Accredits Assessors. The UMA specification is a ‘world first’ open specification for federated delegation and authorization, developed in Kantara’s open consensus based environment designed to give a user a unified control point for authorizing who can access their online personal data. The Consent Receipt Specification developed in Kantara’s open consensus based environment, is being adopted in Europe to help companies comply with GDPR and give control of personal data back to their customers. Companies all over the world are providing high quality credentials to their customers because of their approved status with Kantara’s Identity Assurance Program. Kantara approves Credential Service Providers (CSPs) and Accredits Assessors.
