Simplify Radicals Objective: Students will be able to write radicals in simplest radical form, help to rationalize the detonator in later math

Basic Idea Taking a radical and writing it with a coefficient

Process Make a prime factor tree of the number under the radical Circles pairs of numbers Whatever number pairs are circled write one of them outside the radical If more than pair of numbers is circled then multiply them together outside the radical Whatever numbers are left, not circled and prime, multiply and write under the radical

Example

What if it is not a square root?

Multiplying Radicals Similar to multiplying terms with variables Multiply coefficient Multiply the numbers under the radical Simplify the radical
