Design and Technology: Resistant Materials Year 7 Art Deco Clock Name: Date: Assessment: Making and Evaluating

Design Brief and Specification Art Deco Clock Design Brief and Specification Design Brief: A small clock manufacturing company has commissioned your team of two designers to design and make 2 prototype acrylic clocks in the Art Deco style. These clocks should be identical in design but use opposing colour schemes (ie red on white/ white on red) You will be using 2D Design and the Laser Cutter to manufacture your clock face. You may only use 2 colours and the final product should only have two layers of 2mm acrylic that cover no more than an A5 piece of paper. Specification: My product must: be in an Art Deco style- colours, shapes and patterns have only 2 colours have 2 layers of 2 mm acrylic have a 10mm hole to hold the mechanism Have clock hands that do not hit the props/feet Be stable Be made to fit into an A5 rectangle Have a very simple outline

Art Deco Clock Art Deco Vocabulary Find out the meanings of the following words we are using when designing and making our clocks. Research: Constraint: Mechanism: Acrylic: Commissioned: Prototype: Art Deco:

Art Deco Design Styles Research Art Deco Clock Art Deco Design Styles Research In the space below, paste the image that you are using as the inspiration for your clock face design. Explain why you like it and what you are going to change to make it more interesting.

Art Deco Clock Design Ideas

Art Deco Clock Acrylic Research In the space below, type up the five interesting facts about acrylic that you have found out. Don’t write anything that you don’t understand. Write it in your own words. In the space below, evaluate the use of acrylic as a material for this product. Why is it a good or bad material to use? Consider environmental issues; how it is made, can it be recycled, is it biodegradable?

Art Deco Clock Modelling Report Paste the photo of your clock model here. Why did you model your clock? Why did you use card? What was successful about this modeling? What didn’t work so well? What changes will you make as a result of this modeling?

Art Deco Clock Laser Cutter Research In the space below, explain, using diagrams and annotation, how a laser cutter works.

Art Deco Clock Evaluation Evaluation of your clock with target market. Do people like your clock? Would they use it? Where would they use it? What do they like about it? What would they change about it? How long do they think they would use it for/it would last for? Is it well made?
