Les fêtes de fin d’année IPA by Jessica S. Miller, UW-Eau Claire Les fêtes de fin d’année Novice

Context Winter is coming. How is it celebrated around the Francophone world? Interpretative task (Monday December 12, HHH 316) Examine the brochure of the Strasbourg (France) Christmas market. Then, watch a video showing how this annual event has been adapted in Québec (Canada). Interpersonal task (Wednesday Dec. 14 + Thursday Dec. 15, HHH 316) Every year, the Strasbourg Christmas market highlights a culture other than France. In a 3-minute individual oral interview, discuss ways in which your culture celebrates winter in order to convince the organization director (your teacher) to highlight it. Be ready to introduce yourself, talk about where you are from, and share your favorite winter-related activities and traditions. Presentational task (Tuesday December 20, 3pm-4:50pm, CEN 2704) Based on what you’ve learned, create a local winter market. Hold a table presenting a cultural practice from the French-speaking world that might interest local residents. Think of winter-related topics (e.g., traditions, crafts, stories, recipes). Prepare a script and be prepared to read it in one minute. Bring a visual: a photo, an illustration, an object, etc. Check spelling and grammar.

Strasbourg

Interpretive task: reading Find the French word that best expresses the meaning of the following English words. Use visual cues from the illustration, cognates (i.e., similarities between French and English), and vocabulary you learned so far to help you. In English, answer the following: Based on the brochure, describe (1) one event that you would attend and (2) one even that you would not attend. Be sure to give a brief description of each that goes beyond simply naming the events, and to justify your reasons. (10 points – estimated completion time: 5 minutes) In English, answer the following: Describe a (1) similarity and a (2) difference between the ways your culture celebrates the end of the year with how Strasbourg does it. (10 points – estimated completion time: 5 minutes)

Québec

In English, answer the following: According to the video, what explains the success of this market in Québec? Do you feel it would be successful in your hometown? Why or why not ?Be sure to briefly justify your opinion and draw examples from the video. (10 points – estimated completion time: 5 minutes) In English, answer the following: Where in Eau Claire would you suggest a similar event should take place to reproduce the atmosphere and service offered at the Québec event ? Be sure to justify your choice by referring to a specific element in the video. (10 points – estimated completion time: 5 minutes)
