We need your help. The topic of “Big Rig” extrication has been discussed by a few training officers. A small number of agencies have performed training. With no training documents or procedures how to accomplish safely removing a driver or passenger from a commercial vehicle readily avaialble…we need everybodies help with this training.

We want the crews to perform patient extrication from the commercial cab. Use any equipment you would have available on scene and find the safest way (for patient and firefigher) to remove your patient. Think outside the box. What you do could become the foundation for training materials. Please photograph and document your evolution and forward your findings to your training officer. If your department does not have a training officer available ask your battalion chief. You can always email the training captain from Sno7 your findings ( eadolf@firedistrict7.com )

Not only commercial trucks are tricky. How cool is this? The information we want relates to patient extriction only. We are not looking for rescue tool use in removing the victim. We are not looking for cribbing or securing the vehicle. We want the crews to focus on how to remove a patient who is seated in the cab of a commercial truck that may be 4-6 off the ground. Not only commercial trucks are tricky. How cool is this? It may be our own bother and sister firefighters that we will be called upon to extricate

Drill Overview and Directions 4th Quarter 2012: Big Rig Patient Packaging Manipulative Drill   Scenario: A 53 year old driver of a large truck has been involved in a minor accident and is now complaining of severe neck and back pain. He is unable to self extricate from the driver’s seat of his dump truck and needs to packaged by the responding crew. The goal is to challenge the crew with the successful packaging of a patient at an unfamiliar height. Appropriately package the patient and remove the patient from the vehicle for transport. Safety concerns: The unfamiliar height of the vehicle combined with tight quarters to package the patient. Be creative and ensure enough members are present to avoid dropping the patient. This can simulated easily with a large fire engine, truck or tender unit or a city/county truck if available.

Thank You for helping Your training officers!
