October News - 4th Grade Science Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24-27 Reading In reading, we will be starting Unit 2. The theme is Dollars and Sense. The 4th grade reading fluency goal by the end of the year is 139 words per minute. Please have your child read aloud nightly to practice building fluency. Math We are working on using a comparison model to solve problems using addition, subtraction and multiplication. We will also be multiplying 10’s 100’s and 1000’s. Please encourage your child to study their math facts! Science We are learning about plant basic needs and adaptations. Students will perform a lab that deals with plant life. Social Studies We are finishing our map skills. In October we will begin our study of South Dakota history. Language Arts We will continue to work on our paragraph writing. The Common Core standards in Language are more in depth than our South Dakota standards were, so we will be looking at more parts of speech and more writing situations. We will be starting a poetry unit. We will publish our poems in a book you can buy. Our Halloween party will be the afternoon of the 31st. Please send treats to share. You may wear your costume to school. Spelling Our Spelling words are getting harder. Be sure to have your child study the words for the test on the last day of each week. Make sure your child has a coat, hat and gloves.
