Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was an American artist and the leading figure in the visual art movement know as pop art. His works looked into the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that thrived in the 1960s. Without knowing it, he influenced what we know today as pop culture.

Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, PA Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, PA. Warhol took free art classes at the Carnegie Institute (The Carnegie Museum of Art), aside from drawing he also enjoyed photography. Warhol attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon University). Earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Pictorial Design, with the goal of becoming a commercial illustrator.

Warhol moved to New York soon after graduation to pursue his career as a commercial artist. His work debuted in Glamor Magazine. He became one of the most successful illustrators of the 1950s.

From 1963-1968 Warhol created films scripted and improvised, ranging from conceptual experiments and simple narratives to short portraits and exploitation films.

1962 marked the year of Warhol’s celebrity 1962 marked the year of Warhol’s celebrity. Debuting his famous Campbell’s Soup Can pop paints series, which caused a sensation in the art world. 1964 Warhol’s first exhibition of sculptures was held, hundreds of replicas of large supermarket products were displayed.

What is Pop Art? Pop Art is a form of art depicting objects or scenes from every day life and employs techniques of commercial art & popular illustration. Emerging in the mid-1950s in Britain and late 50s in the U.S.

In 1969 Warhol co-founded Interview Magazine, a magazine devoted to film, fashion, & popular culture. The Magazine is still in circulation.
