Revolutions Inspired by John Locke American Revolution (1775-1783) French Revolution (1789-1799) then again in 1830 then again in 1848…. Haitian Revolution (1791-1803)

France France went from being a monarchy ruled by King Louis XVI to a republic ruled by the people then to a dictatorship run by Napoleon. View the timeline chart on page 692…. In which year did the French government replace the King with a president….

Old World Order Created inequalities in French Society. The King was at the top, and three social groups called estates were under him. 1st Estate-1 percent population. Roman Catholic clergy 2nd Estate-2 percent population. Nobility controlled the wealth, paid few taxes, government and military positions

Third Estate The largest 97 percent of Frances population. Bourgeoisie-merchants factory owners, professionals (lawyers and doctors) Artisans-shoemakers, dressmakers carpenters. Bottom of the third estates were the peasants, farmed the fields they had to pay rent and fees to landowners. 10 percent to the church, Work roads for no pay.

The Storming of Bastille An angry mob went to Bastille to try to negotiate with the commander for weapons. Commander refused the mob swarmed the prison and killed commander and put his head on a pike and paraded it through the streets. Bastille was an ancient prison for people that spoke against monarchy at time only had 7 prisoners.

The Great Fear The Great Fear was a result of a wide spread panic that swept through France after the Storming of Bastille. People feared King would retaliate.

Declaration of the Rights Man and of the Citizen New Rights in early August the National Assembly feudal dues and services. Inspired by English Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence and Enlightenment philosophers.

Effects of the National Assembly King Loiuse ordered troops to protect his throne. An angry mob of 7,000 stormed his palace of Versailles. Moved to Paris to live in the Tuileries Palace with family. In 1792 Paris declared a Republic, by the National Convention. King beheaded 1793
