What color is your Blood? Blood Color

Terms to use for the diagram Artery Vein Valve Right Atrium Left Atrium Capillary Left Ventricle Right Ventricle Septum Valve

Path of Blood Right Atrium Right Ventricle Pulmonary Artery Capillaries/lungs Pulmonary Vein Left Atrium Left Ventricle Artery Body/capillaries Veins

What are your blood Vessel? Artery, capillary and veins Artery- carries blood away from the heart Vein- carries blood towards the heart Capillary – connect the vein and artery and allow materials and waste to pass through walls How long are these together? 60,000 miles

What is the function of the circulatory System? 3. Regulate body temperature- changes blood flow in skin, carries away and prevents heat loss 4. Fight Disease- attack disease causing pathogens 1. Deliver Materials- chemical messages, oxygen, glucose 2. Removes Wastes- carbon dioxide

Cardiovascular system Review DO NOW: 1. Draw a picture of a cross-section of the heart and label the parts(review).song Switch with a partner and use your notes to grade/correct the drawing. In your group number the 10 places blood travels Starting with the right atrium. You can record these answers on your study guide. Right Atrium Right Ventricle Artery Capillaries/lungs Vein Left Atrium Left Ventricle Body/capillaries Veins

Why does my heart beat? Group assignment: In your group you are going to find someone's resting heart rate and then get that same persons heart rate after 1 minute of exercise. Then answer these questions.: Group Discussion: (discuss and answer these questions using chrome book) What is your pulse? What is your resting heart rate? Where are places you can find a pulse? Neck= Wrist = Leg= Bicep= Temple= How did you calculate the heart rate? Why did your heart rate increase? What is the reason your body increases the beats of the heart? 9. Is resting HR a good indicator of your aerobic fitness? True or false 10. How do you calculate your maximum heart rate? 11. Is it Vital to monitor your heart rate during exercise? True or false Is the heart an example of voluntary or involuntary muscle? What are the new pieces of technology that people use to track heart rate and steps? 9. What are 10 ways to care for your heart/cardiovascular system In your group assign these jobs: -Recorder, Researcher, Timer, Exerciser, Pulse taker

Questions Q:What makes the lub Dub sound of the heart? A:Opening and closing of valves Q:What is the most important chamber? A:Left ventricle Q:Where does blood get oxygen from? A:Lungs Q:What bone protects your heart? A:sternum Q:Why is a hole in the septum bad? A:Blood would not get oxygen Q:Why are the capillary walls so thin? A:To allow nutrients and waste to pass though Q:Why are the artery walls thick? A: Because of the force of the blood, to push through body Q:Why does your heart work faster when you exercise? A: your body muscles need more oxygen and nutrients to function and then release carbon dioxide

Blood Pressure What is blood pressure? watch: ED TED Video When your heart beats, it pumps blood round your body to give it the energy and oxygen it needs. As the blood moves, it pushes against the sides of the blood vessels. The strength of this pushing is your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your arteries (and your heart) and this may lead to heart attacks and strokes. What do the numbers mean? Every blood pressure reading consists of two numbers or levels. They are shown as one number on top of the other. The first (or top) number is your systolic blood pressure. It is the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats. The second (or bottom) number is your diastolic blood pressure. It is the lowest level your blood pressure reaches as your heart relaxes between beats.
