A few etiquettes of note taking Listen to what is being said first and then write down the key point ONLY. Give attention to the teacher. Do not spend most of your time writing. If you missed a point, put your hand up.

The OLDEST university in the world In Al Qarawiyin (Al Qara-we-yeen) in Fez (city), Morocco (country). It was built in 841C.E by Fatima al-Fihri.

The University that changed the world She was a pious woman (someone who woreships Allah a lot and becomes close to him) who was very well educated as well. She recieved large amount of inheritance from her father and vowed to spend it all on building a university/mosque. She fasted everyday, until it was completed.

One thousand and 30 years old and still running…EVEN TODAY! Al Azhar University (Egypt) One thousand and 30 years old and still running…EVEN TODAY! Famous members include: Ibn al-Haytham and Ibn Khaldun

University of Oxford One of the top 5 universities in the world. 2nd most competitive university in the UK to get into. Oldest English speaking university in the world. ‘Daniel of Morley’, travelled from Britain to Toledo. He was inspired by what he saw there. He came back and then Oxford University started. House of Wisdom But what exactly was it??? What a cool name! In Baghdad, Iraq But what exactly was it???

House of Wisdom (Baghdad, Iraq) A place for the best minds to meet up to debate and discuss. Research and discoveries took place. Collecting books into its library museum. Translating books from other languages.

The Khalifah at the time was called Al Ma’mun – who collected books from different countries and in different languages e.g. Sicily. Al Ma’mun used hundreds of camels to transport the many books, which would go in the “House of Wisdom”.

To encourage scholars to add more books to the library (by translating). Al Ma’mun would pay them the weight of each book in GOLD.

‘It was this great liberality which they (the Muslims) displayed in educating their people in the schools which was one of the most potent factors in the brilliant and rapid growth of their civilisation. Education was so universally diffused that it was said to be difficult to find a Muslim who could not read and write’ Educationalist- EH Wilds

Why were the Muslims so successful? They fixed their relationship with Allah, so Allah fixed their relationship with everything else. Perfect your deen, then Allah perfects everything else. The Prophet (s.a.w) said “If leaders do not govern according to the book of Allah, you should realize this will not happen without Allah making them into groups and making them fight another” (Ibn Majah)
