Principles of a Grid Reference Eastings and Northings Eastings run from North to South. They are numbered from 00 to 99 and read from left to right. Northings run from East to West. Order of Working a Grid Reference 1. The Easting is always the first half of the Grid Reference. This line forms the west side of the grid square. 2. The Northing is the second half of the GR.
