Monitoring Essential Climate and Biodiversity Variables Gregory Giuliani, Pascal Peduzzi UN Environment/GRID-Geneva GEO Data Providers Workshop Florence, Italy April 20th, 2017

Rationale and Scope Transforming Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) and Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) data into information Funded by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment Collaboration with GEO and CNR Action 1: creation of at least 3 graphs on ECVs using available data from official data providers, to create at least 3 graphs showing trends on Climate Variables (4 graphs were done) Action 2: Using NPP monthly products from MODIS, testing a methodology for transforming raster data into a table to generate a graph and monitor this EBV trend on various locations (world wide, monthly for 2010-2015). Produce an interface for monitoring NPP trend on various locations. A set of organized data automatically updated (not yet) on NPP. the main objectives of the geocab portal is to Provide informations that helps decision makers, policy makers and more generally earth observation products users to become more familiar with EO applications and opportunies and also make these informations freely accessible through a web resource facility

Turning ECVs and EBVs Data into information General idea: Transform global satellite data (raster) or in situ (station data) into aggregated values at various scales (local; administrative level, national, regional or global level. Continue the production of ECVs, test the methodology for EBVs. This could be used for supporting the SDGs the main objectives of the geocab portal is to Provide informations that helps decision makers, policy makers and more generally earth observation products users to become more familiar with EO applications and opportunies and also make these informations freely accessible through a web resource facility

Sources: http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/ Monthly Sea Ice Extent and Area Data Files The ASCII data files tabulate extent and area (in millions of square kilometers) by year for a given month. Access files: 1. Go to the FTP directory. 2. Choose the month directory (indicated by a 3-character month abbreviation) for the data that you are interested in. Within the month directory, search for data files that are named according to the following convention: H_mm_area.txt Where H stands for the hemisphere: N (north) or S (south), and mm is the 2-digit month. For example, the file N_04_area.txt contains data from the Northern Hemisphere for the month of April. Code for automatic update procedures For data which providers have not yet moved to OGC webservices.

System Architecture the main objectives of the geocab portal is to Provide informations that helps decision makers, policy makers and more generally earth observation products users to become more familiar with EO applications and opportunies and also make these informations freely accessible through a web resource facility UNEP GRID generates the datasets to graph UNEP Live visualizes the datasets to users GEOSS brokered EO datasets to UNEP

Achievements Information graphs are daily updated… we can monitor the environment in near-real time.

Achievements End users can download the data, which are formatted for easy access.

MODIS NPP data Accurate measure of terrestrial vegetation growth and production activity. To define the seasonally dynamic flux of terrestrial-surface carbon dioxide for climate modeling. Measure crop yield and forest production and any other socially significant products of vegetation growth. Unbiased, regular source of crop and forest production estimate. the main objectives of the geocab portal is to Provide informations that helps decision makers, policy makers and more generally earth observation products users to become more familiar with EO applications and opportunies and also make these informations freely accessible through a web resource facility
