Why are 2 Peter 2 and Jude so similar? Jude = 2 Peter 2 (thought for thought, not word for word). Jude and 2 Peter 2 are as similar as 2 John and 3 John. 1 Peter 5 and James 4 are close parallels too. Peter worked closely with Jesus’ brother James (Acts 12:17, Gal. 2:9, 1 Cor. 9:5).

Did Jude copy off of Peter, or did Peter copy off of Jude? The Best arguments for believing that Peter copied Jude: If Peter liked Jude he would re-write it to give it apostolic authentication. Easier to explain why Peter would delete references to non-canonical books than why Jude would add them The Best arguments for believing that Jude copied Peter: A non-apostle would copy and apostle. Jude 17 looks like it’s quoting 2 Peter 3:3. The Best arguments for believing that they didn’t necessarily copy each other: The Holy Spirit inspired both Peter and Jude. The teaching of the false teachers was the same.

Reasons people question Jude: Not written by an apostle. Quotes from non-canonical Jewish books. One of 6 NT books originally questioned for inclusion in the Bible (along with 2 Peter). Too similar to 2 Peter 2.

Jude 1-2 (NIV84) 1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ: 2 Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance. Jude likes three’s.

Jude 3-4 (NIV84) 3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. 4 For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. The faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints = the gospel about Jesus the apostles preached.

Jude 5-7 (NIV84) 5 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. Peter’s 3 examples of God’s judgement (2 Peter 2:4-9) = Angels (ref?), Flood (Genesis 6-9), Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19). Jude’s 3 examples of God’s judgement = Exodus generation (Num. 14), Fallen angels (ref?), Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19).

Jude 8-10 (NIV84) 8 In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. 9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10 Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals—these are the very things that destroy them. Peter said the same thing about: immorality, rejection of authority, slander of demons (2 Peter 2:10).

Jude and “The Assumption of Moses”: Acts 17:28b-29a (NIV 84) 28 …As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ 29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone… Paul is not trying to add this Greek poet to the Bible. I’m not endorsing the book of Mormon when I say that I believe Moroni 8:18 and Alma 11:26-31 more than Mormons do. Jude could just be saying even if you read “The Assumption of Moses” in context, it contradicts you and teaches you not to talk bad about demons.

Jude 10-11 (NIV84) 10 Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals—these are the very things that destroy them. 11 Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion. Examples of False Religion Cain = (Gen. 4). Balaam = (Num. 22-25, 31, Rev. 2:14). Korah = (Num. 17-18) These examples show we have to come to God, God’s way.

Jude 12-13 (NIV84) 12 These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. 13 They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. If you aren’t coming to God in Jesus, you need doubt, guilt, and worry about your sin. Peter and Jude agree the end of these false teachers is empty darkness (2 Peter 2:17, Jude 13).

Jude 14-16 (NIV84) 14 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15 to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage. Enoch may be a favorite book of either Peter and Jude or of the false teachers. God will judge the false teachers for their ungodliness as surely as he judged people in the flood.

Jude 17-19 (NIV84) 17 But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. 18 They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” 19 These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. Is Jude citing 2 Peter has his source? 2 Peter 3:3 (NIV84) 3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.

Jude 20-21 (NIV84) 20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 21 Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. “The faith that was once and for all entrusted to the saints” = “Your most holy faith”. Jude’s trio defining our faith is the Trinity. We look forward to eternal life with God the Father, the Son, and the Spirit!

Jude 22-23 (NIV84) 22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. Our response to false teaching is threefold: Mercy = For those who doubt/tempted by false teachers. Snatching from the fire to save = Those in danger of judgment, followers of false teachers. Mercy mixed with fear = For the false/corrupt teachers themselves.

Jude 24-25 (NIV84) 24 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. We are to “keep ourselves in God’s love” (Jude 21). We are “those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Jesus Christ” (Jude 1). God is able keep the angels for judgement, and us for salvation (Jude 6). God is the only one “who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy” (Jude 24).
