When plants harness the power of LIGHT to CREATE food! Photosynthesis When plants harness the power of LIGHT to CREATE food!

Review from last week Talk to your partner: What are vascular and non-vascular plants?

Essential Question: How do plants eat? Goal: I can identify where photosynthesis takes place and write the chemical equation for photosynthesis.

Topic 1: Plants are Producers Producers are organisms that make their own energy. (They do not eat like us)

Discuss with table partner Why do plants need energy? What do they use it for?

Topic 1: Plants are Producers Plants do a process called photosynthesis, which is when they use energy from the sun to change carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen. Plants eat sugar that they make inside their bodies!

Topic 2: Photosynthesis Equation

Topic 2: Photosynthesis Equation In photosynthesis plants uptake certain substance and change them (we can remember this by putting it into an equation)

Topic 2: Photosynthesis Equation 1 cup flour + 1 cup milk + 2 TBSP baking powder + 1 egg + 1 TSP salt (REACTANTS) (heat) -----------------------> 12 Pancakes (PRODUCTS)

Topic 2: Photosynthesis Equation light energy 6 CO2 + 6 H2O ------------> C6H12O6 + 6 O2 How to read that: Carbon dioxide + water + light YIELDS Glucose + oxygen Reactants Products

Topic 2: Photosynthesis Equation

Topic 2: Photosynthesis equation Oxygen is a product of photosynthesis We wouldn’t be able to breathe without plants!!!

Get up and find someone new Partner A: list all of the reactants in the photosynthesis (the starting ingredients) Partner B: list the products in the photosynthesis (what comes out of it). Why are these products important for humans?

Sketch it!

Topic 3: Where??!!

Topic 3: Where? Carbon dioxide enters tiny holes = stomata Sunlight is absorbed Water from roots

Stomata close up

Chloroplasts absorb sunlight

Topic 3: Where? Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts (the green parts)

Get up and find someone new (take your notes) What is a stomata? How do plants get the reactants they need to do photosynthesis?

Quiz Yourself! Use your notes from today to answer the following questions

Where do plants get food? Soil They eat prey They make it themselves They take nutrients from water

Water and carbon dioxide are converted into sugar and oxygen through the process of…. Glycolysis Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Fermentation

Which of the following is an example of a producer? Dog Cat Elephant Tree

The TWO parts of a chemical equation are… Reactants and Products Oxygen and Carbon dioxide Mitochondria and chloroplasts Peanut butter and jelly

Write out the CORRECT chemical equation for photosynthesis

6 CO2 + 6 H2O ------------> C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Check Yo Self… 6 CO2 + 6 H2O ------------> C6H12O6 + 6 O2

In which organelle does photosynthesis take place? Mitochondria Golgi body Nucleus Chloroplast

Pat yourself on the back! Now you can…. Identify where photosynthesis takes place Write the chemical equation for photosynthesis Explain why we need photosynthesis Pat yourself on the back!

Essential Question What is the difference between the Light Reaction and Calvin Cycle during photosynthesis? Objective: I can explain how glucose is made.

Let’s Review! Using the notecards at your table, rearrange them into the correct chemical equation for photosynthesis.

Does it look like this? 6 CO2 + 6 H2O ------------> C6H12O6 + 6 O2

2 Cycles There are two cycles that work together to create glucose (C6H12O6) Light Reactions (require light) Calvin Cycle (doesn’t require light or dark) Photolysis- when a chemical (like water) is broken down by photons

Light Reaction- Needs Light Occurs in the grana of chloroplasts Adds a phosphate to ADP to become ATP Splits water (H2O) to release O2 (oxygen) and H+ (hydrogen) Sends H+ over to Calvin Cycle That’s what we breathe!!

That pore is called a stomata Remember Diffusion? After the Light Reaction, oxygen (O2) diffuses out of the cell that we then breathe! That pore is called a stomata

Calvin Cycle- Doesn’t need light! Occurs in the stroma of chloroplasts Takes in CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Uses the ATP (energy) and H+ from Light Reaction Synthesizes (makes) GLUCOSE (C6H12O6) This can happen day or night
