New England Middle South Education: public education law schooling not as common as New England private tutors for wealthy children only Religion: Puritan (work ethic) diverse, tolerant Church of England Climate: long cold winters; short growing season mild; longer growing season hot, rainy; long growing season Puritans – cared about schooling, founded a new college called Harvard in 1636 (first teacher beath his students, fed them spoiled meat, ran off with college money). ‘cuz of their religion, they weren’t allowed to attend college in England. So history of wanting education. Puritans are now extinct William Penn – born very wealthy, dad was friend of King Charles II. Penn became a radical, hated, outcast group called the Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers. King Charles II liked him until Penn came before the king and refused to take off his hat (quakers only defer to God). King Charles borrowed mney from Penn’s died and when William asked that the debt be paid with land in America, he was given a large chunk. King Charels named it Pennsylvania, which mean’s Penn’s woods. Quakers were among first to object to slavery because they believed in treating all people as equals and respecting all religions. The Caroinas were given to 8 lords by King Charles II. These 8 people wanted the land just to make money and sent people there to farm. North Carolina did not have good land for large farms, so only people that came there were small farmers. They tended to be outcasts and people that the king didn’t like. Pirates started calling this colony home and as a result, it was one of the first colonies to rebel against the king. Geography: rocky soil fertile land very rich soil

New England Middle South Economy: small farms - crops for survival (subsistence) (blend of New England and South) trade food surpluses large plantations diverse economy: fishing shipbuilding fur trade merchants craftspeople staple crops: wheat barley oats cash crops: tobacco rice indigo (labor) apprentices little need for slavery indentured servants (immigrants) relied heavily on slavery slaves - worked as skilled laborers on farms, in cities
