Investing in You! Student Affairs Professional Development Program Orientation Recommendation to have brief (30 minute) orientation to the Professional Development Program Offer several times throughout the year so that employees can attend and learn about the program components Employees will learn about the program design, program goals, and how to use their participation to forward their career Instructions in filling out the Professional Development Assessment Tool

Professional Development Assessment Tool Assessment Tool was created using ACPA/NASPA Professional Competencies and CAS Standards (managers) A unique Self Assessment was created for: Managers Staff Employees Supervisors Colleagues Direct Reports

Professional Development Assessment Tool The goal is to get “360°” feedback for each employee Remind staff that this is a self-directed process, not mandatory Work to encourage staff to participate; coach them on the reasons why the process will benefit them

Using Assessment Tool Feedback Managers and staff members should review results from the Self-Assessment, Supervisor Assessment, Peer Assessments, and Direct Report Assessments (if applicable) with their Supervisor and use the results to create a Professional Development Plan. The Cal State San Marcos Professional Development Plan Form can be used for this purpose.

Using Assessment Tool Feedback When meeting with your staff members, make sure to emphasize: Intended to be a self-directed process This is not mandatory and not connected to their personnel evaluation process Hone in on 2-3 items that show needed improvement Coach the staff person in coming up with a specific staff development plan

Using Assessment Tool Feedback Give performance feedback that is: Specific Concise Realistic Non-judgmental Includes a check-out

Professional Development Program for Student Affairs Managers A professional development program designed for Student Affairs managers to improve their overall student affairs based leadership competencies, skills, and abilities. This program is designed to be offered in monthly workshops. Managers should also use campus Human Resource sponsored workshops, trainings offered by other departments, and seminars offered by off-campus organizations

Student Affairs Managers Supervision and Coaching Day-long Seminar A professional development program designed for Student Affairs managers to improve their ability to coach and supervise employees, including the skill set necessary to create a professional development plan for each employee. This program is designed to be offered as a one-day seminar.

Professional Development Program for Student Affairs Staff Employees A professional development program for Student Affairs staff employees, to improve their overall student affairs based competencies, skills, and abilities, with particular emphasis on career advancement. This program is designed to be offered in monthly workshops. Staff should also use campus Human Resource sponsored workshops, trainings offered by other departments, and seminars offered by off-campus organizations Managers can work together to create learning opportunities for the Division. Manager Accountability for Professional Development Plan Managers will be expected to participate in conducting their own assessment and discussing with their supervisor Managers will be expected to encourage staff to develop a professional development plan, utilizing the assessments available
