FLASHLIGHT POWERED BY HAND’S HEAT By Courtney Howard

Summary 16 year old Ann Makosinski. Invents flashlight that is powered by the heat from your hand for a science project. No more batteries. Would be shining for as long as you hold it, provided there is a difference in temperature between the hand and the core of the flashlight. Could have an immediate effect on 1.2 billion people who lack regular access to electricity.

Vocabulary Voltage conversion: an electric power converter which changes the voltage of an electrical power source. Peltier tiles: utilize heat flow to generate electricity. Millivolts: one thousandth of a volt.

Significance Have an immediate impact on 1.2 billion people - one fifth of the world’s population who lack regular access to electricity.

Questions What kind of support did she get from her family? What motivated her to do this project? What is she going to do now? What needs to be done?

Research Question: What motivated her to do this project? Answer: Ann is half Filipino and has visited her friends and family in the Philippines. She discovered that many of her friends don‘t have electricity. And according to Ann her friends couldn‘t get their homework done at night and were failing school. “That was the inspiration for my project.” said Ann, “I just wanted to help my friend in the Philippines and my flashlight was a possible solution.” http://news.discovery.com/tech/alternative-power-sources/flashlight- powered-by-hands-heat-130701.htm
