The Problem of Evil and Suffering

The Definition of God Catholics define God in three ways. Benevolent (all good) Omniscient (all knowing) Omnipotent (all powerful)

The Problem What is the Problem of Evil? Benevolence If God is all good then he would want to get rid of evil and suffering. Omniscient If God is all knowing then He must be aware of evil and suffering. Omnipotence If God is all powerful then He could get rid of evil and suffering. Conclusion So, God knows about evil, wants to get rid of evil and is capable of getting rid of evil, and yet it exists. So can the God of classical theism exist? What is the Problem of Evil? How could something look like natural evil but really be moral evil? Use the challenge on page 19 to help you.

The Inconsistent Triad Benevolent Omnipotent Evil Exists

Evil and Suffering and Non-Belief in God Why might the problem of evil and suffering lead someone to reject belief in God? (8) God cannot be benevolent if he allows evil. If bad things have happened to us we might want to blame God or conclude he does not exist. People may ask God to end suffering and when he doesn’t they conclude he does not exist or is not the God we thought he was (definition) Moral evil can be explained because it is our fault but surely God must have caused Natural Evil?
